Show BIG cottonwood transportation I 1 the salt lake telegram has the follow I 1 ing to say regarding hauling conditions in the big cottonwood canyon section of salt lake county utah the last of five caterpillar tractors and sixty trailers for use in the transportation of ore in big cottonwood canyon has arrived in this city within the next lew days they will be placed in operation in the canyon marking the end of the reign of the horse in another field the new departure is the result of continued difficulty between city county and mine officials over the use of many horses horsell f on the cottonwood road resulting in contamination of the city water supply city and county officials after numerous investigations determined that impurities found in the city water were due in a large measure to the horses traveling over the road the mine owners det determined erminea on a new means of transportation with the result that a new company was formed and the tractor equipment ordered the equipment was purchased in oak aind california from the C L best company it consists of five tractors and sixty trailers J B austin and abe jr are back of the local company which will take over the ore hauling contracts the caterpillar wheels are wide and it is claimed that the trains can tie DC operated the year round five tractor trains will be operated in the canyon each consisting of one tractor and twelve trailer cars heretofore ore from the cottonwood mines has been hauled in heavy wagons drawn by four and six horse teams it is said that more than horses will be banished from the canyon road as a result of the new means of transportation ore bins have been constructed at the junction of north fork and big cottonwood the tractors will operate from this point ore will be concentrated at this point be ing hauled from the mines by the old tern tem horses and wagons more bins are to be built at the railroad railroad j terminal winchester and railroad streets these bins bins will cost approximately aa the tractor trains will unload in these bm bill from which the railroad cars will be loaded loa j faolu fr with hundreds of horses removed believe beai the road city and county officials to that one of the greatest contributors lamination tami nation of the city water has been e J bated |
