Show y fellowships IN metallurgy 1 l in the department of metallurgic a research search of the state school of mines university az sity of utah there have been established rt five research fellowships in metallurgy each t having an annual value of these fel 4 11 low ships are open to college graduates who have had a good training in chemistry and 1 metallurgy and applications for them will be received up to may 1916 aepli cants should send a copy of their records f from the registrars office of the college where they have been or soon will be graduated and the names and addresses of at least three references who know their character ability and attainments those holding fellowships for the fiscal year 1915 1916 and the fields in which they are working are glenn A allen alien university of kansas B S in mining 1915 flotation processes richard W T johnson university of north dakota B S in mining 1915 of zinc harper C nevada university ver sity B S in mining 1915 of zinc clarence E sims university of illinois B S in chemical mining 1915 electrolytic processes M J udy university of utah B S in chemical engineering 1915 of lead harry J morgan leland stanford jr university A B in metallurgy 1914 and george P F stott university of utah B S in mining 1915 losses in milling processes by an agreement with the united states bureau of mines the work of the metallurgical research department is under the direction of metallurgists of the bureau assigned to duty at the university and salt lake city since january 1914 D A lyon metallurgist has been in charge of the work assisted by other members of the metallurgical staff of the bureau assigned to duty at salt lake city and with headquarters at the university since that time 0 C ralston assistant metallurgist J F cullen chemist dr F B laney and R E head metallurgical assistant have also been assigned to the work due to the fact that salt lake city and vicinity is one of the chief nonferrous non ferrous metallurgical centers of the united states and that the work taken up is of a practical nature that is has to do with the solution of definite problems the university believes that these fellowships offer a splendid opportunity port unity to young men intending to enter the metallurgical profession to thoroughly familiarize themselves with up to date metallurgical practice especially in the treatment of nonferrous non ferrous ores and to become proficient in the adaptation of those processes which may be in line with the investigation carried on by them in connection with their work during the fiscal year 1915 1916 the following problems have engaged the attention of those holding fellowships 1 A study of the flotation processes in order to determine their applicability to the treatment of ores which are not at the present time being treated by such processes pro cesse and especially the low grade lead carbonate ores of utah 2 the hydro metallurgical treatment of low grade and complex lead ores 3 the treatment of carbonate ores of zinc especially with reference to the hy dro metallurgical and igneous concentration processes 4 A study of the eff effects acts of roasting on complex zinc lead iron sulphide mixtures with especial reference to the solubility of the various constituents of the ore after roasting 5 electrolytic deposition of lead and zinc from their solutions 6 cyaniding Cyan iding of refractory silver ores with especial reference to aluminum as a substitute for zinc in precipitating gold and silver from cyanide solutions 7 losses in milling processes holders of these fellowships will be subject to the rules governing employees of the national bureau of mines and will report for duty july 1 1916 they must also register as students in the university of utah and become candidates for the degree of master of science in metallurgy unless this or an equivalent degree has been previously earned their class work will be directed by the heads of the departments of instruction and their laboratory work as previously stated by metallurgists of the bureau of mines fellows are appointed for one year but the appointment may be renewed address applications to jos F merrill director of the utah state school of mines salt lake city |
