Show I 1 gintic tintic to 1 nt ic D district D astric t has been B een a producer P ro ducer for forty five years by WILL C HIGGINS the old saying As enduring as the hills certainly applies to tintic gintic mining district one of most prolific camps for a period of forty five years the mines of tintic gintic have been steadily and generously adding to the enduring wealth of the world and they are still producing some of them heavily and with a steadily increasing tonnage while a few after producing many millions are gradually becoming limited as to their ore reserves and getting ready to accept the inevitable and gracefully resign from their former proud positions which with most pleasing regularity are being occupied by new producers for tintic gintic notwithstanding its age is far from having reached the zenith of its greatness as yet and its future viewed from every standpoint will undoubtedly add to the pres prestige fige so long enjoyed by this great mining section deccio n of the west the first discovery of high grade ores ofes in tintic gintic was war made in the gou southern bouthern thern por sidn n of the district in what has long been I 1 designated as the porphyry zone this aas was in the year 1869 when the noted sunbeam mine was located the sunbeam produced many thousands in high grade ore in the early days from mere surface workings the nearest railroad shipping point at that time being santaquin San on the old utah central railroad now a portion of the salt lake route system other properties which were profitably i productive and con contemporary tempora ry with the sunbeam were the bonanza the joe bowers homestake Home stake silver spar him Z q the gemini mine and hoisting plant photo by will C higgins butcher boy morning glory julia lane golden treasure and tesora in the year info 1870 the bullion beck was discovered in eureka gulch on the north side of eureka mountain this old time bonanza up to its transfer to the united states company a few years ago having had a dividend paying record cording tic lic to all reports of over two an and d a half mi millions alion the great eureka hill the next door neighbor to the bullion beck was discovered in the same year and has even exceeded the latter in its production of material wealth and it A is producing today although on a limited scale and principally by leasers leaders lea sers following closely upon the heels of the discovery of these two great mines came the gemini and the centennial eureka which are still in the healthy producing class while later oh the godiva the may day and the uncle sam were added to the list as regular producers in the eureka end of the district while three new mines the chief consolidated the eagle blue bell and the victoria have so nobly responded to intelligent development that they promise to equal if not to excell th the e 1 splendid records made by the leaders of the eureka end of the district years ago soon after the discovery of the bullion beck and the eureka hill on oft the northern slope of eureka mountain the great mammoth mine was found in the foothills on the west side of the same mountain and for forty four years this wonderful property has been an almost continuous producer it is an old saying that a really good mine is never exhausted or never entirely depleted of its mineral treasures the mammoth it would seem is in this class for it is still on the list in the near vicinity of the mammoth js are the grand central the gold chain and the Opo hongo the grand central has haa been listed as a dividend payer for a number of years and it is pleasing to state that recent disclosures underground give promise of heavy and profitable production for years to come the gold chain and the Opo hongo are youngsters of the kindergarten type although both have pail their initial dividends and give promise of a continuance of these pleasing remembrances the lower mammoth has also made a record as a producer and dividend payer and is still in the running as one of the promising mines of the district it is scarcely more than ten or fifteen years ago that important discoveries were made on the east side of the mountain jesse knights humbug first called attention to that section by the fortune it made its owner during its early history since then several great mines were developed along this marvelous ore making channel W vl 5 47 ar ga at the dragon mine and hoist photo by will C higgins included in the number being the yankee consolidated the beck tunnel the colorado the iron blossom and the dragon these discoveries more than anything else led co a rejuvenation of the district which had been on the wane for a number of years A smelter was built at silver city and a narrow gauge railroad was constructed ted so that the output of these mines could gain easy access to the two spurs of main lines of rail railways w ays which have their terminals at silver city and which also aa so give shipping facilities to the mines of mammoth the east side mines have already paid many millions in dividends and although in the case of the beek beck and Colora colorado dp whose ore has been practically exhausted in their shallow workings it is believed that greater depth will disclose new ore bodies of even greater size and value than existed in the zones of enrichment found near the grass roots at silver city on the south end of the mountain two mines made that portion of tintic gintic district somewhat famous less pa ek jf the pittari pit hawk hari twelve years ago these were swansea arid and the south Swan swansea seW both of controlled by the knight which are now syndicate these properties were worked to the water level before being closed down but their ore bodies were strongly in evidence at this depth and when big pumps are installed and work is resumed there is every reason to believe that these mines will again resume production the pioneer of tintic gintic district who bravely faced many hardships existing there nearly half a century ago would hardly recognize the change that has taken place since the discovery of the sunbeam the bullion beek beck and the eureka hill for now almost every facility exists for successful and economical operation conveniences of every description have been introduced such as electricity for light and power telephone systems water works while spur tracks from two main lines of railroads run directly to the ore bins of nearly every producing mine in the district the three leading towns in the district eureka mammoth and silver city have their churches fine school structures cement sidewalks and graded streets the reporter published at eureka is by far one of the best mining camp papers published in the west the diversity of the character of the ore depositions of district offers a wide range for successful mining operation the principal metals existing in the mines of the district are silver lead gold copper and zinc primarily the mine products are of shipping grade and almost the entire bulk of mine output has been shipped direct to valley smelters shelters sm elters in the crude still large quantities of low grade have been milled and a far greater tonnage exists in mine workings which w will il I 1 eventually be dressed at home before consigning to the market the zinc deposits of the district nave ibave for years been practically worthless and sometimes a hindrance to mine owners but the increased demand for this commodity during the past few years has resulted in the bucce successful SS ful hand ling of 0 this erstwhile waste product A year ago profiting by the marked ad advance vall in zinc quotations the may day yankee consolidated the scranton the east gintic tintic development company the lower mammoth and gemini produced and marketed largo large quantities of carbonate and silicate zinc ores the aggregate output of these nain mines for the year 1913 being pounds 1 of I spelter the decline in price towards the close of the year however resulted in ill decreased shipments of this class of material and mine owners are waiting for an advance before again giving active attention to their zinc ores the only exception being with the scranton in north tintic gintic district which maintains regular shipments the knight christensen mill the knight christensen mill constructed for the treatment of the low grade ores of the camp will it is hoped and believed be of great assistance and benefit to mine owners having large amounts of low grade ores which under previous conditions could not be handled profitably this mill has been but recently installed and it has only been in active commission for the past week the process of ore reduction in use was evolved by N C Q christensen geologist and metallurgist who is engineer in charge at the plant this process combines and roasting followed by salt acid leaching a and n d pre precipitation c P 1 ta on scrap iron the product is a metallic precipitate containing gold silver lead and co copper the average e recovery at the present time it is stated is 80 per cent of metallic values although a higher e extraction X is expected ultimately and it is beli believed e ved that 4 ore can be handled at a small margin of profit depending on mining costs at the present time the mill is handling about eighty 0 tons of ore daily running three shifts the capacity of the plant is in the neighborhood of tons per day with a crushing capacity in ill ex cess of that tonnage the ore being treated is now corning coining the from the dragon mine mind but later on oil mill will treat ores from all of the anine of the knight syndicate including the beek beck tunnel the colorado the iron blossom the black jack and the dragon the mill is located on a lower level than that occupied by these properties and the ores from these different mines will be delivered to the plant over the knight railroad practically by gravity twenty men are employed at the mill J F nielson is superintendent at the plant A complete technical description of the equipment of the mill and the process employed is promised for the mining review at an early day the yankee consolidated the yankee consolidated at the present time is doing extensive work on the and 1700 foot levels on the in a drift run to the south the company is crosscutting cross cutting the beck tunnel ore channel on the 1700 level an excellent and most encouraging showing is being made 3 r t zy V chief consolidated power house and hoist photo by will C higgins in a drift from the shaft that is being run north of east cast the company has given four or five leases in the upper workings of af the mine and shipments from this source are in the neighborhood of tons per month the yankee has a double compartment shaft with manway down to the 2050 foot level the property is equipped with an electrically operated hoisting plant engine i house and excellent surface accommodations since the year 1900 the mine has produced in ore records of prior to that date are not easily accessible the yankee has a total of paid in dividends A E canfield Oan field is general managers manager and lew merriman is 9 superintendent the may day mine for two months or more the may day mine has been worked by leasers leaders lea sers kitt and mitchell but the property will be taken over by the company on june 1st ast kitt and mitchell have already shipped over twenty three cars of ore one of which went exceptionally high in its metallic content returns showing per cent lead and 2565 ounces silver this ore came from the upper workings of the mine and the company when it resumes operations will continue work in the same level the may day mill tailings purchased from the company by C C griggs are being treated on the ground by the cyanide process of recovery there are large quantities of zinc bear ing ore in the mine workings and during the high prices ruling for this commodity during the year 1913 the company shipped tons that averaged 32 per cent in its zinc content the property is equipped with an electric hoisting plant the shaft has attained a depth of 1100 feet to date the company has paid in dividends J C dick is general manager and C C griggs is superintendent the uncle sam the uncle sam mine a near neighbor of the may day is shipping from four to five carloads of silver lead ore per month at the present time the property is being worked by leasers leaders lea sers the mine has an electric hoisting plant and a foot shaft the company has paid in dividends J C dick is manager and C C griggs is superintendent the chief consolidated the chief consolidated now one of the largest producers of the district is shipping abo about ut 1000 tons of ore per week prin cipully from the 1000 1200 1400 and 1600 foot levels from the 1600 level a has been sunk to a still greater depth on a body of shipping ore this was started 1200 feet east of the shaft the ore now being consigned to the smelters shelters sm elters goes from 15 to 20 gross to the ton the mine is in a most satisfactory condition and the workings are now en fering what is believed to be a a third ore system already shipments are being made from the new ore discoveries which have been made in the new system which is towards the town of eureka from the main shaft if this new zone comes up to expectations the mine output will be materially increased while the increase in earnings will be noticeable in addition the cost rate under existing conditions will be much less than if the new ground had been opened through new shaft workings and with new hoisting equipment the company has paid in dividends and has a big cash reserve in its treasury walter fitch is general manager cecil fitch is superintendent and walter fitch jr is assistant superintendent A spur from the main line of the D R G railroad is being b built to the ore bins at the mine the eagle blue bell the eagle blue bell is shipping about tons daily the ore being of good commercial grade during the last f five ive years the eagle blue bell has produced about smelter returns total production to da date te is in the neighborhood of dividends DiviA dividends ends to date imer pett is gene general ral manager wm owens superintendent and thos P billings consulting engineer the property of the company is located on the mammoth ore zone which in the past has produced its millions operation and development is through a triple comp compartment t shaft which has attained a depth of 1550 feet on this level a large body of exceptionally fine ore has recently been disclosed the extent of which has not yet been determined the mine is modernly equipped the character of the ore is sil ver lead and gold some oi of 1 the deposits produce ore of very high grade and single shipments to the smelt eries often run up into big money the mine is ably managed and promises to make a wonderful record in the future the mammoth mine the mammoth ammoth GM mine is one of the oldest producing mines in tintic gintic district for nearly half a century it has been giving up its treasures and is still a profitable producer the working shaft has attained a depth of 2 2100 feet with a from that level down to the 2360 foot station where ore is still showing at the present time however production is confined to the and levels the mine physic ally is in a sa satisfactory factory condition the company compan y is working men and Js is out J 1 7 pik the yankee consolidated mining
