Show LION HILL consolidated MINES BY WILL C HIGGINS twenty five years ago lion hill had much of the appearance of a prairie dog town in western kansas for the dumps made in early mining operations were to be found on every hand while the mine workings were almost as shallow as were the holes made by the dogs here however the similarity ended for the grass root workings under the numerous dumps on lion hill generally penetrated great bodies and chambers of ore from which early workers took fortunes without the trouble and expense of going to a depth elcee exceeding ding feet and many men who have since become famous in political and financial circles circle 3 in the west can point with pride to the fact that they made their first big money from the rich mines of lion hill or that it was here that they first heard the buzzing of the political bee for the humble himble miner in isolated camps have the number were the forebears of the well known walker brothers of salt lake wiio who were reputed to have taken a fortune out of a bonanza lodged in the lime formation of the hill working for them was marcus daly a humble son of erin who displayed more than ordinary ability both as a miner and a man of affairs daly and whose mansion in new york is pointed to with pride by every resident of gotham was also interested in the early mining history of lion lio n hill while colonel R E other old timers was buckskin clark one of the veterans of the hill and a respected and lio honored nored old timer who had a keen nose for ore and who could follow a fissure to where it made into wonderful bodies of high grade ore as easily as the ordinary man of today can follow the track of an automobile along a dusty r road oad there were others also who made name and fame faille as well as fortunes in mining operations on lion hill is of late ills ais great dome with untold treasure rac rok bound aund within its breast has been about as qui etland as little tallied talked about as an extinct volcano p to within a few years ago lion hill For formation nation lion hill is compose composed P I 1 principally inci pally of bedded or banded limestone a formation jn in which some of the greatest mines in the world exist from supposedly profound depths great porphyry dykes have intruded through the lime me to the surface causing numerous fissures through which mineral hearing bearing solutions have ascended depositing their metallic values in cavities in the lime caused by the disintegrating qualify of the acids in the solutions sometimes these chambers were small sometimes they were very large but it has always been the case that although the fissures often narrowed down to mere seams they ultimately lead to paying deposits when followed to quickly advance from one chamber to the other has long been the form or style of mining operations on lion hill almost since initial work was started in the development and working of its mines an hi imitation of prairie dog burrowing as it were and yet it is believed by merit and yot yet this fall down resulted in a black eye for the district and its sequestration to the ranks of has beens for years however there has not been a month hardly when leasers leaders have not been fattening their bank accounts from the proceeds of the ore taken from old tunnels drifts and slopes prominent among these has been george st clair a native son of the district who probably knows more about its vein system and mineral deposition than any man in it and george clark a son of buckskin and a firm believer in the ultimate outcome of the hill together these two men have taken fortunes from the old workings of the chloride point from the deserted chambers and cavities of the old northern light and they were largely instrumental also in the merging of these properties and in the formation of the lion hill consolidated soli dated mining milling company tor for extent through the chloride point tunnel which has followed the chloride point main fissure into the mountain a distance of 1500 feet at the face of this avenue which has followed the vein continuously and from which thousands of tons of rich ore have been taken in the past the lode has dipped at a sharper angle into the hill and this is being followed by an incline which has been in a splendid body of ore from which seven carloads have recently been shipped which brought the company in the neighborhood of from this same source similar shipments will be made from time to time or until such tinie time as a deeper working tunnel can be driven to the same deposit of high grade material meanwhile the old tunnel on the northern light is being cleaned out and re timbered this tunnel is in a distance of feet the last work in it was done by leasers leaders who are reported to have taken J 1 orm 22 CA 7 N 0 vp lion hill showing the formation and stratification ophir in canyon below experienced mining engineers and well informed mining or eureka two of leading mining districts some activity fifteen years ago about fifteen years ago renewed activity was noticeable in mining circles on oil lion hill at that time the northern light was in the limelight and chloride point was its running mate the buffalo mining company and the cumbaa Cumb ta also received considerable attention at the hands of the public the north corhn p light paid more attention to mill bu cuing than to mine development and th tb blocking sut lilt of its ore bodies whilst a cyanide plant built for the tre atme nf t of chloride point ores failed to agn gi e expected results the failure of thes etwo two companies however could not be attributed to a lack of mine their development and operation lion hill consolidated mines minea about a year ago the lion hill consolidated soli dated AT M AT company was taken over by a maine corporation styled the lion hill consolidated mines the preliminaries were arranged through the medium of edmond A fordyce co of boston the consolidations effected taking in an area of forty two claims fourteen of which ar are e patented and covering such well known properties as the northern light chloride point circle buffalo and columbia with their equipment and improvements all of these with the exception of the buffalo were purchased outright with the stock of the new company on the buffalo the company has held a bond and option on oil which payments have been made at regular intervals ter vals the balance now due it is stated state ben being e only a small amount and which will soon tj liquidated since the organization of the new company werk wi has been prosecuted to a large ore from its face valued at to the ton the tunnel is badly caved in several places but when it is again in working order it is confidently believed that manager st glair clair will be able to continue the extraction of ore equally as rich as that taken out by leasers leaders some time ago in the chloride point tunnel the vein ranges from twelve inches to twelve feet in width and at the intersection with cross fissuring it has attained dimensions of from ten to forty feet of course such bodies bot do not represent high grade shipping in their entirety but the pay shoot is generally quite large carrying values ranging from 30 to ounces silver and from 2 to 8 in gold with some lead present the low grade which exists in large quantity ranges from 15 to 40 ounces silver and several thousand tons of ore of this quality are blocked out in the mine workings g as and this may be milled on the ground at no distant day the ore in its general characteristics is a chloride and is in good demand at the shelters smelters sm sni elters the company owns two pipelines one of which connects with the gold belt water system while the other carries water from springs in the near neighborhood the water supply therefore is adequate for all milling purposes the springs are on two patented claims owned by the company machine drills are used in mining work the power being compressed air delivered through a pipe line from the ophir hill operating just across the canyon from lion hill As yet no water has been encountered in mine operation and it is confidently fi believed that the workings will be dry to a depth of at least 1800 feet the surface improvements consist of boarding houses assay office blacksmith shop ore house etc and conditions are such that work can be carried on all win za IV z ka on R aa 4 4 I 1 I 1 ik 1 at NOV lit atz ft 4 LIT lion hill consolidated mines workings on chloride point side of the
