| Show 0 FINE RECORD OF TUNNEL MACHINE post denver colo on saturday last the projectors made a test run of the karns tunneling machine at boulder those present at the run were H A sumner and W W weston chief engineer and geological expert of the moffat road thomas fielding of the firm of hampson fielding W A townsend representing stearns steams ro rogers ers J C houston assistant cashier first national bank of denver william P ryan railroad contractor V A kauffman of the central colorado power company formerly tunnel inspector during the building period of the moffat road on account of the bad condition of the roads their time at the mine was very limited allowing after thorough inspection of the machine and its equipment only an hour and a half for actual running in this time there were two runs of approximately thirty two inches each with the moving up and resetting between these runs an operation consuming approximately seven or eight minutes the actual running time watches being held by mr sumner and mr weston was eighty nine minutes in which time the machine accomplished sixty four and one quarter inches of complete six foot tunnel in rock which would be considered harder than the average they are arranging for another run to take place probably on monday or tuesday of next week all present at the trial above mentioned were impressed with the perfection of the machine and its rapid work the boring of sixty four and one quarter inches or five and one quarter feet in a little less than an hour and a half is considered an excellent record for a new invention of this character this signifies that by continuous running for ten hours the machine ought to make over fifty feet a day the utah karns tunneling machine company has the sole rights bior this machine in utah president belcher is now making arrangements to take a party of local newspaper and mining men to boulder to witness a demonstration the results of which will be awaited with interest the company expects soon to have a machine in operation in this state when its merits will be fully demonstrated |
