Show INSPECTOR THOMAS REPORT p pOR Something of the Mine and Where V ere I It Is Located On Jan J 1 1 of this year State Coal CoalMine CoalMIne CoalMine Mine Gomer Thomas made the following fo report to Governor Wells ens of the condition of the mine at t that time Winter Quarters Quart rs mine is the proper ty of the Pleasant Pl Valley Coal CM com corn pany puny and in ia situated about sixteen L miles miJ s up u a 8 canyon can n off th the maIn Hie or ot branch of the tho Rio Grande Western I railway from fro n Colton The mine is under uDder the supervision I of T G ey and is one of the oldest mines in the state of Utah and the largest producer producing in 1 I hort tons using k kegs s of 01 powder an increase of tons ions It II employs men Average number num ber of ot i dayo daYD worked was In 1899 The mine Is artificially ventilated L with a Guibal exhaust fan running at al the rate of revolutions per pet minute producing feet of air aIx per pet minute which is distributed to all the working places in the e mine All coat coal coa i is hauled on main by uy a a L hoist The Tho marl al 1 thi mine during 1899 are Large sidetracks s inside of mine mi on O one new chute three boilers power line stockers for tor c ch h boiler boiler bailer house large board bo rd ing lug house and one large bunk house My first official visit of inspection i tion was on Jan 9 to 13 The mine was working full time with good tion Hon On the tho of January wa wn was our o r first experience e with trouble with the law The drivers came out dissatisfied with goh in and out of the mine on their th ir own on time They hey de demanded demanded demanded 25 cents of advance per day or go In and out of the mine on the time They Thew were out one day They decided that they go in on the time and come out on their own time On this visit I found sound lots Jots of water in the manway manRY making It inconvenient nO eni nt for the t men to go and ume irom work i 2 suggested to ie Superintendent T 1 J 3 that this be fixed at once which was Vas done immediately My lIy second visit of inspection was wag wason aeo on March 14 to 17 I found the mine I working full time with the usual num ber b of men with mine working two shifts On this visit I 1 found a num ber of on the main entry leaking which caused a scarcity of air aJr in the working places p aces I took the fore foreman foreman man and him this and he had I It repaired at once onca On my third visit of inspection ion to this mine mine June 9 0 to 12 I examined the mine inside and out nut 1 I found it in good condition but not nol working full time I found plenty of prop P and cap pieces placed near the working places place in accordance with the law The fan was running at the rate of a less than revolutions producing cubic feet per minute The mine was drained properly with all working and traveling places dry My fourth official visit of inspection was July 12 to 14 On my visit I in inSPected I tho th mine in and out nut The mine m I was working one shift and not full I time The superintendent was wag making lots l ts of repairs preparing for the fall fun trade I found the mine In general in ina a very fine condition My fifth visit o ot Inspection was July Juh 28 to 30 On this visit I examined only the main traveling trave ing ways rays ways and a few of or the working places I 1 found all the traveling ways in So good I The mine working a little better bott than on previous visits vis ts On my sixth visit of inspection Oct 17 and 18 I examined the mine inde and out They were iere working two shifts with 35 men I found the mine in good condition with ample crops and cap pieces near the working places All miners were getting all aU the work they could coui do d and the could not fill all their orders for the want wantS of more miners mins The Ventilation was fairly goon goob considering can the amount of powder used In the min minAll minAll All shots are fired in this thie mine by the miners at any an time My lIy seventh official visit was Dec 2 to t 5 Sand and 6 On this visit I inspected Winter Quarters No 1 No 2 and No 4 AH An the miners were working full time and arid all aU the tho men they could get set and andall andall rid all aU in good condition with good air and all an were in good and all working eight hour houra The run of the mine No 1 on this date was 2000 short abort tons lons |
