Show CENSUS DATA ON Many Concerns Engaged in Copper Lead and Zinc Smelting WEST LEADS IN INDUSTRY NEARLY ALL COPPER IS REFINED IN THE EAST The bureau of the census has Just is issued issued issued sued bulletin No 86 which contains special special cial reports on copper lead and zinc smelting and refining These reports which form part of the census of manu manufactures manufactures manufactures of 1005 1905 were prepared by Story B Ladd under the he supervision p pM of William WilliamM WV M Y Steuart chief statistician for manu manufactures manufactures manufactures The statistics included In the bulletin are for the calendar year 1901 1004 with the exception o oi of those for Michigan which cover coer the year ending June 30 1904 1004 The Combined Industry According to these statistics establishments establishments establishments were reported as engaged In Inthe inthe inthe the combined Industry of copper lead and zinc smelting and refining Their combined com combined combined capital was They em employed loyed wage earners paid I In In wages consumed materials costing and manufactured products to the value of Copper the Most Important At the the census of 1900 the lead smelting refining Industry was the most Important of the three branches and copper was second but at the census of 1905 1900 the positions positions positions were reversed At the later census the copper industry supplied per cent of the capital percent per cent of the wage earners and per cent of the value of products product while the lead industry fur furnished furnished per cent of the capital per percent p percent r cent of the and per cent of the value of products That the growth of the copper Industry has been greater than the growth of the lead is partially due duo to an increase in the practice of oC smelting the dry ores of the precious met metals metals als ala with copper Instead of oC lead ores Copper Smelting and Refining Copper smelting and refining was the principal industry of oC forty establishments the combined capital of which was 76 These establishments furnished employment to 1275 paid In wages consumed materials costing coating and manufactured prod products products to the value of When compared with the figures for forthe forthe forthe the census of 1900 those for 1905 show a de decrease decrease decrease crease of per cent in the number of ot establishments but an nn Increase of ot per percent percent percent cent in capital or per cent in wage earners of per cent in n wages w es of 61 per cent in cost of materials and of per cent In the value of products Copper Refined In the East The growth of the Industry however has not been uniform In the sections east cast and west of the Mississippi The figures reveal a tendency toward the growth and concentration of the refining industry in inthe Inthe inthe the eastern territory In 1900 this terri tern territory territory tory reported only SS per cent of the relining re refining refining fining lining while In 1905 It reported per percent percent percent cent The operations of the western es establishments establishments are now confined almost en entirely entirely entirely to smelting with In a majority of cases the conversion of the matte into blister copper which Is refined in the east Gold and Silver Sliver Byproducts At the census of oC 1905 the product of at smelting was valued at and that of refining at The products of smelting consisted roughly of pounds of fine copper contents of blister or anodes valued at pounds of fine copper contents of oC matte valued at ounces of all sil allver silver ver er valued at and ounces of oC gold valued at The products of refining consisted roughly of pounds of ingots wire bars etc valued at pounds of oC blue vit vitriol vitriol vitriol riol valued at ounces of silver sliver valued at and ounces of gold valued at Thus it appears that the product of the precious metals resulting from smelting and refining refining refinIng ing copper is valued at about In 1900 the product of the precious metals resulting from smelting and refining cop copPer copper copper Per was a little more than New Jersey Leads In Refining New Jersey is the largest larest producer of fined copper and between 1900 1000 and 1905 1906 It Increased ed its production of the total for forthe forthe forthe the country Of the pounds of ingots wire bars etc ete reported in 1900 New Jersey produced per cent while of the pounds reported In 1905 It produced per cent The refining in in New York also made a great groat advance so that the states of New Jer Jersey Jersey Jersey sey and New York Tork reported for 1905 nearly of oC the refined copper product of the country Michigan was third and Maryland fourth Lead Smelting and Refining Lead smelting and refining was the lead ing ins Industry of establishments the aggregate capital of which was 63 83 s These establishments employed 7 paid In wages consumed materials costing and manufactured products valued at When compared with the corresponding figures given at the census of 1900 those for 1905 1006 show a decrease of per cent In the number of establishments of per cent in capital and of 9 per cent In Inthe Inthe inthe the average number of but buton buton buton on the other hand they show an increase of ot 56 per cent In total wages of per percent percent percent cent in cost of ot materials and of 59 53 per percent percent percent cent in value of products The decrease in the number of active establishments in capital Invested number of ot and general operating expenses has all 1111 been in the west for establishments east cast of the Mississippi river show Increases in these th S Items Quantity of Lead The products of ot the lead smelting and refining Industry consisted of pounds of lead valued at OOl of ounces of ot gold valued at I and of ounces of ot silver sliver val valued valued valued at As compared with the corresponding figures for 1900 those for 1905 show an Increase in quantity of per cent for lead of 24 per cent for gold and of or 31 per cent for fsr silver sliver In value lead Increased 6 per cent and gold 19 10 per percent percent cent but silver decreased 17 per cent I That the development of the precious metals met metals metals als did not keep pace with that or ot lead I II I Is not due to a decrease in the precious metal values of oC the lead ores treated but results from the large in increase increase increase crease in the tho quantity of dry gold and silver ores treated by the copper smelters This increase in the consumption of dry ores by the copper cop er smelters has been at atthe atthe atthe the expense of the lead smelters Zinc Smelting Zinc smelting at the census of 1905 1906 was carried on In establishments the combined capital of which was 23 xi These establishments employed paid In wages consumed materials costing and aUlI manufactured products valued at m At the census l 1900 the tho same num number number number ber of establishments was reported Be Between Between tween 1900 and 1905 however capital In Increased increased Increased creased per cent average number of per cent total wages 63 per cent cost of materials per percent percent percent cent and value of products per cent The West Surpasses the East EastA A consideration of the figures for for the sections east and west of the Mississippi shows that at the census of 1900 the value of products was greater In the east than thanIn In the west Between 1900 1000 and 1905 how however however however ever the value of products increased only 33 per cent in the east while in the west westI U it I Increased per cent The west thus became more important for or at the census of 1906 1905 its products valued at 14 Oo while the products of the east were ere valued at only Increase in Quantity and Value Tho The products of the zinc smelting in industry Industry industry were roughly pounds of spelter valued at pounds of sheet zinc valued at pounds of zinc oxide valued at and pounds of sulphuric acid valued at As compared with the corresponding figures for 1900 WOO these all represent substantial Increases The percentage of Increase In value varied from for sheet zinc to for zinc ox oxide oxide oxide ide while the percentage of Increase In quantity varied from for sulphuric acid to for zinc oxide Kansas Produces 59 Per Cent Kansas which ranked second in the out output output output put of zinc products at the census of 1890 1590 was easily first In 1900 1960 and 1905 At Atthe Atthe Atthe the census
