Show I A LETTER FROM C Ce W Y I ITHE THE HE following letter from C e W V Nibley was vas published by b the Deseret News yesterday esterday Deseret News There are a 3 few people just at this time who are clamoring for the publication of a private letter which was sent by Senator Smoot to President Joseph F P Smith in January 1909 I believe that rewards have been offered for the publication of this private letter also for the telegram which was sent by Senator Smoot to President Smith as answer to the tele telegram telegram I I gram which has been published so extensively and which was signed by my myself myself self Hyrum M Smith and Nephi L Ia Morris I would w not n intrude any an of or these t e e matters on the t News which pertain p rt in to toI i I would w not n intrude any an of or these t e e matters on the t News which pertain p rt in to toI political questions except t to explain the reason why Senator Smoot should ask President Smith to read a certain letter to the senders of the famous tele telegram telegram gram Prior to January 21 1909 which is the date of the letter in question Senator Smoot had received numerous communications from leading men and members of the church urging that something should be done relative to the statewide prohibition question that the church through its resolution passed at conference was demanding statewide prohibition and that certain mem members members members bers of the church had gone so far as to claim that legislators who were mem members members members bers of the Mormon church c were bound by the action of the conference I whether present and voting for the resolution or not Senator Smoot moot held to the view that it was a dangerous proposition for lor forthe forthe the church as such to insist on the passage of any measure before the legis legislature legislature legislature lature and holding to these views would he not very rightly and properly write to the president of the church on such a matter which he did in a letter covering several pages Now as the signers of the famous telegram were church officials of more or less prominence what more natural or proper way would he answer the telegram we sent than by asking the president of the church to read his letter to us which was written a few days before and which from his point of view covered the whole statewide prohibition question Especially when it is remembered that in our telegram sent to Senator Smoot we stated that the church demands it itI itI I submit that in view of the facts in the case there is no I man who will not be he inclined to say that Senator Smoot made to the senders of the telegram the most full proper and sensible answer that could have been given under the cir circumstances circumstances circumstances V Respectfully C W NIBLEY ii n in i iThe I The above would seem to be a thorough answer to B IT H Roberts who was posted for membership in the Ananias club when hen he declared that there had 1141 b M no answer to that famous telegram Also it seems to fit Jimmy fimm Moyle Movie and B F Grant Roberts and aud Grant would certainly be able to qualify as the slander elander twins |
