Show I GIVE AND KEEP ON GIVING We want every reader of The Herald to peruse the mes message message message sage of E H Harriman president of the Southern Pacific to W H li Bancroft head of the Harriman roads here After look ing over the situation in in n person Mr Harriman wires that there should be no cessation of effort to aid the homeless people of San Francisco and he hy lays particular stress on the need teed of food supplies f No description can begin to convey any idea of the mag awful of the immediate relief work necessary to avert aw ful ul suffering and loss of life When one remembers that hun of thousands are dependent upon outside aid for the bare necessities of life and that a large proportion of these sufferers are women and children remembering this common com common common I mon humanity calls cabs for renewed effort added sacrifice until the situation clears and the people of San Francisco begin to I see eee daylight Every train brings refugees whose stories add to the horror of the narrative already published every ever dispatch only emphasizes the agonizing details of the calamity that buried the coast city in woe Listening to the tales that come with those who vho nn wonders s that flesh and blood could en dure such scenes and still live The sufferings of men were bad enough but the exposure of women and children the help less ess ones apes to the anguish that was theirs is heartrending to contemplate No one can read of these things without feel ing the impulse to do something however small for their re lief and no one should hesitate to give and give and give dive again even at a heavy he sacrifice to alleviate the want that lies so near to us While the catastrophe is unprecedented in the ruin wrought it has its brighter side The loss of life in bly small due no doubt to the fact that the earthquake shock came canle at a time when few were in in the business district which suffered most While the estimates differ it is agreed that the dead will probably not number over a thousand if that many and these were chiefly in in the tenement district where the old construction was inadequate to withstand the shock Most of the damage was wrought by fire and the people threatened had time to flee to the parks and other places of safety The stories too of epidemics and outbreaks of the plague have proved gross exaggerations exa and the prompt medical relief being furnished by cities far and near will doubt less forestall the danger dander of any general pestilence The promptness with which the San Francisco authorities have attacked the sanitary problem gives grounds for the belief that danger dander in this direction will be averted The call for med ical supplies for vaccine points and for disinfectants is made as s a precautionary measure and indicates intelligent t n by bv competent medical heads No one can estimate just lust how long it v 11 take to restore order older inspire confidence and enable the people of San Fran Francisco Francisco cisco to establish themselves so they will be independent of outside aid Thirty days seems a short period for such a stu stupendous stupendous dean b task months more likely will be needed before the city can be placed on a basis basis But for at least least a month it will iH probably require the efforts of the charitably inclined of the whole country to carry the sufferers over their emergency jn I n any event it seems clear that a long steady stream of contributions of all sorts must be directed toward the Golden Gate Salt Lake has begun its work of relief splendidly and contributed nobly It should and will continue just so so long as it is evident help is needed It is a curious commentary on the frailty of human nature that some suspicious persons ask how the relief work is to be administered and ask it as though th ough that were an excuse for refusing to give dve The distribution of supplies is in charge of the quartermasters department of the United States army the most efficient and reliable organization or that could under take such a task The expenditure exp of moneys is in charge of Governor Pardee Pa dee of California the mayor of San Francisco and a committee of prominent men whose names furnish ample guarantee that every dollar will be spent honestly and to good food purpose There T ere is is no o excuse of any kind for not giving Now is IS the time to give EASILY COUNTED Boston Herald Herad HeraldA HeradA A few years ago there lived In Thet Thetford Thetford ford tord Vt a man by the tho name of Solon R Berry who was
