Show PROTEST OF THE 1 NATIONAL GUARD Officers of the California Militia t Feel That They Have Been Unjustly Criticized t Oakland April 23 In answer to the criticism made of the work of the na national national national guard in San Francisco General Koster has Issued the following state statement statement statement ment Immediately after the earthquake the national guard troops were called out for patrol duty and to render every assistance in their power In the ab absence absence absence sence of well defined organization of all the military and police forces each troop took upon itself the performance of such duty as seemed the most important im important important at that time Since then how however however ever the city has been redistricted between the regular army the national guard forces and the San Francisco police poUce department In addition to the performance of regular patrol duty the national guard has established through throughout out the district relief stations for the purpose of providing both food and shelter This in a measure has re reduced reduced reduced the force that might otherwise I be available for mere patrol duty Have Preserved Order Since taking command of the dis trist assigned no disturbance of any kind has occurred in the national guard district but a great deal of ot annoyance has been caused to troops many special deputies many of whom it is believed are The presence of ot these deputies has in inmany inmany inmany many instances given rise to complications complications and in some instances unpleasantness unpleasantness unpleasantness I all aU of ot which has been laid to the national guard troops We certainly certainly certainly think this is doing the state forces a great injustice In the face of all this a committee of citizens 1 passed a resolution today to the effect that In view of the fact that a large number of f regular troops are available J for patrol duty it was deemed advis advisable I able to request the governor to with withdraw withdraw draw the national guard organizations j The resolutions are commendatory in intone intone intone tone but nevertheless the officers and members of the national guard feel that It was a slur upon the service coming as it does in the face of or the many complaints which have been t made against the organization |
