Show Ti t c cia ia 4 Jt I IC r C M DANIELS The Champion Swimmer Who Vho Will Represent the United States at the Games FOOTBALL INJURIES ARE CO PILED BY A UNIVERSITY OF IlliNOIS PROFESSOR p L Pro Prof Edwin D Dexter ter of the UniversIty of Illinois has been bean gathering football statistics since the close of the 1905 1205 sea season season son to determine the truth and falsity of the report of football injuries deaths etc Professor investigation was very thorough and brought out the fact that many of the accounts of Injuries and nd deaths are e either ther untrue or greatly exaggerated He gives the following facts In an article In Popular Science Monthly Up to the time ot of writing thIs paper Jan 20 replies have been received sixty of which are from lege men from high school players and two from others Twenty four letters have been returned marked by the th postmaster No such person in the directory An analysIs of the sixty replIes from college men shows the fol lowing somewhat interesting facts fourteen of the number as assert assert sert the entire falsity of the report in one or two Instances the man had not even played the game In question In the rest any Injury is denied other college men acknowledge the report as true in a general way Of this number however four say that the injury was the merest trifle and that no time ever ver was vas lost from classes time lost from colIe collee work on the party of the col college college lege players who specify some loss Ions as follows 1 hour 1 3 days 1 1 iday day 2 2 weeks 5 2 days 4 1 to 2 weeks 2 The remainIng seven report a longer time averaging about a month though 1 three say am sta staying out until ChrIst ChrIstmas nina mas the sixty college pla ers 3 reported twelve stated that at the time Um of answering my letter they had not nol wholly recovered from the injury When we consider that In some Instances the reply was made within a week or two ot of the time ot of Injury and In no Instance more than two months after this mini num number ber does not seem excessive the part ot of five players It could not be said with certaInty that the Injury would not prove permanent Michigan Columbia Harvard Chicago and Illinois each has one In this class For these men the particular Injury and the reply to the question as to perma ence are as follows l Ligament ot of knee ruptured Cant say definitely Think not 2 Spine wrenched Physicians say I shall ultimately recover 3 BlOW on head My orders from the doctor are If you remain quiet and take good care of yourself you ou will entirely recover 4 Partial detachment of retina It Itis is not unlikely that a part of this area will remain permanently detached from Signed by physician 5 Knee injured floating cartilage Very serious and unless an operation could eliminate It the danger of a very unreliable knee This completes the record of the col college college lege men except for the fact that aU all aUbut allbut but five assert that they were in good training This however means nothing In itself since we have no means of knowIng what proportion of the whole number ot of men playing football were un unseasoned Unseasoned seasoned |
