a corn com i of kidney stomach and heart i troubles and about fifteen months ago spent some time in Southern California for the benefit pf of his health He was somewhat improved by the change b but t believed till a few da days s ago lie he was improvIng but Saturday he suffered a relapse and gradually sank till the hour of his death He was unconscious during Sat Saturday Saturday or at least unable to speak The doctor thinks this may ha have ve resulted from paral of the vocal chords A Afew Afew few moments before his death he seemed to re recognize the members of the famil family and with a smile and a look of recognition he passed away Funeral services s will be held at the tabernacle Wednesday beginning at 11 Biographical Sketch John C Graham was b born rn in Liver Liverpool Liverpool pool England July 23 1839 His par parents parents William C and Elizabeth Ley Leyland Leyland land Graham were among the first converts to Mormonism in their city being converted through h the teaching of the late President John Taylor His parents came to Utah in 1861 locating in Salt Lake and later moving to Provo The deceased associated with the Millennial Star at the early age of 17 and was for or eight years ears engaged in inthe inthe the office e of the church assist assisting assisting ing in the emigration of the Saints etc and part of the time h holding the position of assistant editor of the Star the late President George Q Cannon being the editor Came to Utah in 1864 In 1864 he emigrated to Utah ing the plains Iii Warren B Snows company On reaching Salt Lake be was offered a position in the business office of the church where he remained for several years During this time he became with the D Deseret s ret Dra Dramatic matte matic association and became prominent prominent nent in the early da days s in theatrical cir cirdes des of the territory He took a leading part in almost every play presented in inthe inthe the Salt Lake theatre at that ti time e and supported all the stars that came ame cameto ameto to Utah among them Julia Dean Hayne Edwin Adams John McCullough McCullough lough Lawrence Barrett and Adelaide Neilson and assumed the management on the retirement of Clawson and Caine in 1871 In the spring of 1873 he was called to Europe on a mission and again became assistant editor of the Millennial Star under the late Albert Carrington and later under President Joseph F Smith Purchased ased Enquirer in 1877 In 1871 he came to Provo and pur purchased purchased chased the Utah County Enquirer r then thena a semiweekly paper Ten years later he incorporated the business under the name of the Enquirer PUblishing corn com company pany and became editor aid manager arid and commencing at that time the pub publication lof the Daily Enquirer Mr Graham has also been connected wIth many other business enterprises in iii this city He was one of the leading spirits in the building of the Provo opera house one of the incorporators ot of the First National bank of of which he was a director till it was merged Into the Provo Commercial and Savings bank and a 3 m member or of the board of directors of the Provo Coope Cooperative tiYe in Institution the P L I M B company and a director in other business con concerns cern cerns After moving to Provo he organized a dramatic company composed ot of W tal talented young Provo people The corn com company pany developed great ability under his I able abIe training and achieved more than local popularity Republican in Politics I When the division diVI in national cal party lines W va made he was one I of the first ot of the old Peoples party to espouse the Republican cause to which I he remained unswervingly loyal and to toI which he h s rendered valuable I servI ices by his personal zeal mid ability and I through the Influence of his paper He was chaIrman of the Utah county Re ReI Republican pUblican committee until 1598 and for I many ears a member of tl the e can state executive committee He I held the position of tru tee of the State Agricultural college for two years was wasa a delegate to conven tion in 1892 was appointed postmastEr of Provo by President McKinley and has served as a member of the Provo cit city council He has given much I to church dutIes in addition to mis missionary work in native nathe his land ser in lug as a home missionary and in a I I great number of church positions and was one of the e ts of the thirty fourth quorum of seventies at the time of his death He has been the husband of three wives and the father of children fourteen of whom are living Among mong them are Mrs C W Barnes of this city and Miss Sadie Graham of the Provo Prove postoffice J C Graham jr and M H Graham of this city A T Graham and Leyland Graham of Salt Lake the latter in the railway mail service and Frank Gra Graham Graham ham an of the Deseret N wf Two brothers William C Graham and Joseph L Graham both of this city also survive e him Led a Useful Life Mr Graham has led a bus busy useful lif life He was s a man of genial person personality aUb a devoted husband and loving father and most kindly and helpful to his friends Always earnest vigorous and uncompromising in the support of f fany any cause in which he enlisted lie he en encountered encountered countered opposition but his ability was recognized even by his opponents and his sterling qualities of heart anti and mind will enshrine him in loving re rc remembrance in the hearts of a host of friends while life Ufe lasts and cau c the heartfelt sympathy
