March C Graham I manager and editor of the Provo En EnquIrer Enquirer died at his bis home today at 11 1 surrounded by memberS of hIs t I family Mr Graham has been m ill for I about abou t two years sUffering from a com coni combInation of kidney stomach and heart troubles and about fifteen months ago spent some time In Southern California for the benefit of his health He was somewhat improved by the change bt s me three months ago he agaIn be became became came worse and has since then been confined to his room It was believed till a few da days s ago lie he was Improving but Saturday he suffered a relapse and gradually sank till the hour of hIs death He was unconscious during Sat Saturday Saturday or at least unable to speak The doctor thinks thIs may have resulted from paral pa sis of the vocal chords A Afew Afew few moments before his death he seemed to re recognize the members of the family and with a smile and a look of r recognition cognition he Passed away Funeral services will be held at the tabernacle Wednesday beginning at 11 Biographical Sketch John C Graham was b bUrn rn In Liver Liverpool Liverpool pool England July 23 1839 His par parents parents William Villiam C and Elizabeth Ley Leyland Te land Graham were among the first converts to Mormonism in their city being converted through the teaching of the late Pr President ident John Taylor His parents came to Utah in 1861 locating in Salt Lake and later movi moving g to Provo The deceased became associated with the Millennial Star at the earl early age of I 17 and was yas for eight years engaged in inthe inthe the office e of the church assIst assIsting assisting ing lii in the emigration of 01 the Saints etc and part of the time holding the position of assistant e of the Star the late PresIdent George Q Cannon being the editor Came to Utah in 1864 In 1864 he emigrated to Utah bross ing the plaIns in Warren B 8 Snows company On reaching Salt Lake he was offered a position in the business office of the church where he remained for several years During this time tim he became with the Deseret Dra Dramatic matic association and became prominent nent in the early days in des cles of the territory He took a leading part In almost every play presented in inthe inthe the Salt Lake theatre at that time and supported all the tars stars that ame ameto ameto to Utah among them Julia Dean HaDe Hayne EdwIn Adams John lough Lawrence Barn Barrett tt and AdelaIde I Neilson and assumed the management on the retirement or of Clawson and Caine in 1871 In the sprIng of 1873 he was caned to Europe on a missIon anti and again became assistant editor of the Millennial Star under the late Albert Ca rington and later under President Joseph F Smith Purchased Enquirer in 1877 In he came to Provo and pur purchased purchased chased the Utah County Enquirer r then thena a semiweekly paper Ten years later he incorporated the busIness under the name of the Enquirer Publishing corn com company pany and became editor and manager and commencing at that time the pub publication of the Daily Enquirer Mr Graham has also been connected with many other business enterprises iii hi this city He was one of the leading spirits In the building of the Provo opera house one of the incorporators of the First National bank of ProW of which he was a director till it was merged Into the Provo Prove CommercIal and Sayings Savings bank and a member of the board of directors of the Provo Cooperative in institution Institution the P L M B company and a director in other ather busIness con concerns concerns cerns After moving to Provo he organized a dramatic company composed of tal talented young Provo people The corn eom pany developed great ability under his able training and achieved more than local popularity Republican in Politics When the division in national cal party lines W wa made he was one of the first of the old Peoples party to espouse the Republican cause to which he remained unswervingly loyal loal and to which he h has s rendered valuable ices by his personal zeal and abIlity and through the influence of his paper He was chaIrman of the Utah county Re Republican publican committee until 1898 and for many years a member of the can state executive committee He held the posItion of tru trustee tee of the State AgrIcultural cOllege for two years was wasa a delegate to conven tion in 1892 was appointed d postmaster of Provo by President McKinley and has served as a member of the Provo city council He has given much to church duties in addition to mis work in his native land ing as a home missionary and in a great number of church positions and was one of the ts of the thirty fourth quorum of seventies at the time of his death He has been the husband of three wives and the father of children fourteen of whom are living Among them are arc Mrs C W Barnes of this city and Miss SadIe Graham of the Provo Postoffice J C Graham jr and M H Graham of thIs city A T Graham and Leyland Graham of Salt Lake the latter in the railway mail service and Frank Gra Graham Graham ham an of the Deseret N w Two brothers William C Graham and Joseph L Graham lIfe He w was s a man of genial person personality alit a devoted husband and loving father and most kindly and helpful to his friends Always earnest vigorous and uncompromIsing in the support of any cause In which he enlisted lie he ell en encountered countered opposition but his ability was recognized even by his opponents and his sterling qualities of heart and mind will enshrine him in loving re remembrance remembrance in the hearts of a host of friends while life lasts and cau e the heartfelt sympathy of all to go out to the stricken family In their great be bereavement bereavement |
