Show GIRLS GIRtS ni HERDED Hi if ED LIKE SHEEP IN Imo DRESSING ROOM R Four Hundred Students Eat Lerch ut ch Standing in Crowded En Enclosure Enclosure closure clos Hung With Hats and Wraps Grounds Are Without Seats of Any Kind The problem of fitting a square peg into a round hole is a small one com corn compared pared jared with that presented to the fac faculty faculty faculty o 0 of the University of Utah these days in fitting 1200 students into ac accommodations accommodations accommodations for about of that number A cursory visit to the state institution reveals a state of or af affairs affairs affairs fairs as to cramped spaces and lack of facilities which is fairly amazing A dressing room about ten by twenty twenty twenty ty feet affords accommodation 2 1 to nearly girls and this Is turned at atthe atthe atthe the noon hour Into a lunch room of hasty dispatch where several hundred girls must stand to swallow a hurried bite Here stand young girls whose i classes have been continuous through 1 the morning hours packed In like sar sardines sardines sardines dines with a lunch basket or box In one hand nibbling a few bites of Its contents All An around are hung rows on rows of hats and wraps to which will willbe willbe willbe be added when colder weather sets in rubbers and heavier outer clothing I It is s true that there are lockers a afew few but these are placed so far from the class dass rooms that the girls who are fortunate enough to possess a fourth of one for sometimes share one are compelled to travel up and down several flights of stairs each day In order to get books wraps or anything they the may require for their numerous studies One of these lockers when opened displayed four hats two lunch baskets Innumerable books and sev several several eral ral sprays spra s of various plants brought for nature study stud It was found that four girls shared the tiny space for all the belongings belon they the require for a full day at school Club Women Interested Recently a body bod of club women vis visited visited the university being especially interested in the conditions as affect affecting affecting ing the girls and the they found things In such shape that they have set to work to provide some of the most needful things out of their own pockets One of the first moves has been peen to provide at least a temporary rest room with two cots One end of the waiting wailing room has been curtained oft off ot by Miss lIss Lucy Van Cott the dean d nn of the womans de department department department and here the cots have been placed and the girls who have been ill III or fatigued have had a place where they might HP tie down In such a gather gatherIng gatherIng gathering Ing of young women seldom a day goes goesby goesby I by that some one Is not overcome either elthel with fatigue fati ue or other weakness and md heretofore only the bare floor has been Available in to such cases eases The room used Is entirely Inadequate even for Its former uses but it was the only avail available available available able spot for placing the cots This waiting room which Is ostensibly ostensibly ostensibly bly for the use of the faculty or stu students students dents In receiving parents or visitors has had Its uses extended under the guidance of Miss Van Cott to Include brief visits Between students either boys or girls or both thus relieving the crowded conditions of the halls which aro are far too narrow to permit of any loitering without inconveniencing others oth others others ers Here too students may ma converse quietly here may be finished papers lessons or any special line of work re required required required and here a very limited num number number I ber of girls or boys may find a moments mo moments I ments rest in an easy chair between I I II classes Only a small s tt table is provided I for writing but It Is intended to secure a large writing table long enough to I accommodate several so that work may maybe maybe maybe be completed and made presentable pre at leisure Library Overcrowded The library is so crowded that its use is limited to college students alone the large body bod of preps and the normal students now fortunately dwindling year ear by year being entirely en lreh shut out from the use of or it as a study room There Is indeed no study room in the entire library lIbra building except ex ept as the library may be u d for reference by bythe bythe bythe the advanced students In the science building where the large assembly room occupies the top floor the preps have an Ideal study room but no library advantages are accorded these students For the first time since the buildings on the hill were constructed there is to tobe tobe tobe be some effort to offset these crowded conditions within doors by making at least resting places s on the extensive grounds There is today not one seat to be found on any of the walks No place except the steps of the buildings is provided for a moments moment rest in passing from one building to another a course taken by some students as many as al five times a day Since the addition of Miss Van Cott to the faculty faculty faculty ty steps have been taken to secure seats and these will shortly be placed on the tho grounds This will at least af afford afford afford ford an outdoor eating olace ulace for fair fairweather fairweather fairweather weather and will do much mach to relieve the congested condition at the noon hour A maid has been secured to look after the condition of the girls dressing rooms and a marked Improvement In conditions pertaining to health has been noted Much lIuch more is waiting to be done however and amI the usual serious lack pf of funds prevents the carrying out of needed Improvements The gymnasium presents a fine appearance and is the best equipped building on the grounds But its use Is limited to classes in physical ph instruction and the accommodations accommodations accommodations afforded to the girls are mea meager meager meager ger Added to all the other discomforts many of the students why who board and an consequently do not carry cam luncheons are unable to obtain any lunch at the noon hour because of the limited fa facilities facilities facilities offered by the one little shop outside the grounds If only one spot could be secured foe fec fO the serving of a noonday luncheon under the supervision supervision supervision sion of the school much of the tile physical discomfort would be relieved Dr Statement There is no denying that we need another building was the statement of President J T Kingsbury when his attention was called to the conditions quoted above There are not enough classrooms nor are those now in use large enough Besides this we have been obliged to allow students to eat in the classrooms because there th re Is no place provided for them This how however however however ever Is the best we have been able to todo todo todo do We Wa asked last year for an addi additional additional additional appropriation for another build building buildIng building ing but failed to get It Some effort has been made to have an addition built on onto to the gymnasium which might be used as a dining room and kitchen There be no one at fault for the conditions as they exist said Miss Lucy Van Cott when asked to give a statement on the subject The university is badly hampered by lack of room and one of the most impera imperative Imperative Imperative tive needs Is an eating place This would relieve much of the crowding of cloak rooms and halls haIts The regents have already set apart a piece of land near the gymnasium for the purpose of erecting a dining room and kitchen If some man or woman would give the necessary money for the building I believe bellee the club dub women would provide a large amount of the equipment This Th s would be the very best way in which th the state as a 3 whole could be helped for it is the young Oung people especially from outside of the city who need a place to procure a suitable luncheon at the bare cost of material A dining room capable of seating would accommodate the en entire entire entire tire university as three separate luncheon hours are given e |
