Show FALL FALLING DERRICK DERRIC KillS WORKMAN Thomas Coughlin Meets Death on Site of the Newhouse Building JOHN KELLY IS INJURED CABLE SNAPS UNDER HEAVY LOAD OF STEEL One man was killed and another injured by tha falling failing of a derrick at the New Newhouse Newhouse Newhouse house building Main and Fourth South streets yesterday morning about 9 The dead man was Thomas Coughlin an iron worker of If 55 36 South West w si Temple street The Injured man is John Kelly Kell another Iron worker Both men were members of Structural Iron Workers of America Union No 27 1 About ten of the Iron workers em employed employed on the Newhouse building were engaged in unloading a truck when the accident happened The men were lifting several heavy beams at a time with the aid of a derrick The weight of one of these loads caused a steel cable supporting the derrick to break The instant the cable parted the derrick toppled over the four tour remaining rema cables being insufficient to hold It in place The men about the truck seeing that the heavy mast was descending upon them scattered Coughlin for some rea reason reaBon reason son Bon hesitated beneath the massive piece of failing falling timber JUst before it struck him he bent forward receiving the weight of the mast ast upon the back of his head He was was wa crushed to the ground and pinned beneath the timber When Then taken out from beneath the mast It was found that he had received a com corn compound compound pound fracture of ot the base of ot the skull a broken leg and other Injuries He was still alive when his mates car carried carried ried tied him to an improvised ed couch at the side of the stationary engine used In op operating operating operating the derrick but he died before Dr J F P Critchlow arrived Kelly escaped with slight injuries As the mast fell tell upon him Kelly threw him himself himself himself self to the ground As one end of or the big piece of or timber Umber struck and rested upon a pile of or material this left a space be between between between tween the ground and the mast which saved Kelly from being crushed crashed to death Justice of the Peace Dana T Smith vis viz visited visIted the Newhouse building after the ac accident accident accident and investigated the cause of ot the death of Coughlin He Ho will not hold an Inquest unless advised by the county at attorney attorney attorney torney to do so |
