Show Secretary Ilobrnno .Hakes a Staleuieiit. Washington, 20. The secretary of the navy denies tho published statement state-ment that h transmitted money to the house of Jay Cooke, McCulloch &. Co. in September, 1S73. The money was tranmuitted to the paymaster general of tho navy, then in London, to pmtect tho credit of tlio navy in the event of Jay Cooke, McCulloch & Co. stopping payment of navy drafts, and was dcpoeiictl in the lt.ink of England, and with J. S. Morgan. Xo advances were made to Jay Cooke, McCulloch Co. until tho latter part of October, after the house had shown its intention and ability to continue it reguUr payments of navy draltst and alter ample security had been given to protect the government. The secretary also says that the investigating inves-tigating committee can have all the telegrams, including tho translation of ciphers on asking the department i for thetu. |
