Show , RESTORE THE RATIONAL PRESTIGE. Tne old democratic party possessed some resources of eta upmanship which often prevented the culmination culmina-tion of home disturbances. Had jeitlier Douglas or Breckenridye been elected president iu 1SG0 the howling abolitionists of that day would probably prob-ably have been uilenced by some foreign enterprise, which would have turned the patriotic impulsed of tho nation in another direction. All tho democratic wars brought territory, wealth and honor to the government; the republicans opposed thetn all. The republican civil war devastated and ruined the nation itself, and became be-came the prolific eource ot generations genera-tions of Amorican misery. The republican re-publican party wasted the great accumulations accu-mulations of the democracy, leaving only poverty, debt and Alaska as its contributions to tho nation. It will remain for the democratic element tc revive American patriotism, restore the prosperity of the people, and give it its old continental prestige at home and abroad. |
