Resolutions were adopted endorsing and reaffirming devotion and adherence to the national nation-al republican party and its principles; that the negroes, however, have just raason for complaint against those members who proved recreant to their trusts; returning thanks to the friends of freedom; disfavoring any desire to cherish ill feeling against the ei-slaveholding element of the south, but on the contrary extend to them the olive branch ofpeaco, asking all good men to arise in their sovereign capacity to strengthen the arm of the law, aud protect ail citizens citi-zens against mob at-sassi nations, outrages out-rages and violence; that the determined deter-mined aud increasing efforts of the enemies of the race lo establish a color line present a condition of affairs to be deplored by all lovers ol liberty and order, the tone of which threatens the continuance of the peace, security and prosperity, both of blacks and whites; hold no sympathy sym-pathy with ofiieial rogues, but moil earnestly condemn d s-honesty, s-honesty, corruption aud infidelity to public trust in whomsoever found; most liearlily subscribe to the policy, "let no guilty man escape;" recognize the appropriate services rendered in their behalf by President Grant, assuring him of their lasting gratitude. Supplemental resolutions were adopted, recognizing the validity of the present state government o; Louisiana, under which Piuchback was elected to a seat in tho United , States senate; deeply deploring the manner in which his contest ended, I and regarding it as humiliating to the ! pride of colored people of America; that Senator Morton, by his unyielding unyield-ing course and thoje senators who voted aud acted with him are deserving deserv-ing ol the lailing gratiludo ol colored American citizens; that compulsory education be inaugurated in the southern states. John M. Langiioti spoke to tho large audience with reterence to recent re-cent supreme court decisions bearing upon bis race. |
