Show THE SPLIT. The Beecher scandal lias now taken a new turn in the New York and Brooklyn A&jociatiou of Congregational ministers. The resolution reso-lution of Dr. Storra for a mutual council, to be called by the Andover church and the Plymouth church, failed, and a series of resolutions passed 13 to 9 authorizing a committee com-mittee of five to investigate the charged against Beecher, the committee com-mittee to consist of R. S. Storrs, W. I. Buddington, L. Smith Hobart, R. S. Stono and N. W. Vergen. Dr. Buddington spoke against this resolution, reso-lution, taking the ground that it recognized re-cognized the action of the advisory council, which was not a Congregational Congrega-tional body. Beecher said that the churches represented in that council were of the true type of Puritan Congregationalism, while the churches represented by Dr. Buddington was a new species of Congregationalism. After the passage of the resolutions, Drs. Buddington and Storrs entered a protest against the action of the aa- sociation, and sent a note to the moderator, withdrawing from ita membership. It is probable that this action on the part of Congregational ministers of high standing ol the so-cedera so-cedera will lead to a division of that church, which may extend throughout through-out the country. |
