The ollicial mortuary report of Memphis, Tenn., shows that duringtheye.tr 1876 there were 652 deatha among the white population and 601 among the colored, or in other words, considering the proportion propor-tion of white and colored inhabitants, the death-rate among the colored waa nearly four times as great as among the whites. The republicans, who secured special legislation for these unfortunate people, had an eye solely to the political use to be made ot them. They provided a bank wherein lo entrap the negroes' hard-earned hard-earned dollars and steal them, but there is no nvidence that they ever did anything for their souls or bodies. |
