Show litfbt ol n Forger. San Francisco, 3. A few dayB ago William R. Cooper, Btock operator of this city, disappeared suddenly, and it was ascertained that be had forged the name of J. P. Treadwell to checks on the bank of Sather & Co. and the National Gold bank and trust company com-pany to amounts aggregating over $50,000. It is now established that Cooper is tho individual who, in 1867, committed heavy forgeries on the government while employed in the navy department. He married a daughter of government printer Defrees, and was arrested on his wedding wed-ding day, and finally consigned to MoyamenBing prison, Philadelpbi&.for five years. He is supposed to have gone to New Orleans since ht3 Sight from this city. |
