Show " The k L,lfbtniu TurifT. New York, 1. In relercnce to the u'n.-bab'e charges in telegraphic rates President Orion eays: I verily believe tliat for every increaie there are ten reductions. Our policy is to encourage encour-age business by low rates wherever the volume of business will justify low rates. For eeveral months there have been three class a of ral"?d for the si;me distance, viz., one rate between com petiug stations, which with lew ex captions have been 25 cents for ten words without regard lo distance, 2nd, rates between cumpe.iug and uoii competing stations, which have been 25 cents to $1 lor ten words, acd 3d, rates between non-competing station in the same territory from 25 cents to $2 for ten words. To equalize these rales without making loo great an increase in-crease in some cases, and too great a reduction in others was a difficult tank. Under the new tarifl' our first step will be the extension ol the 25 cent r.ite in the territory of the Mississippi river from 25 miles ab herelDlure to 100 miles in an air line from each station. This will be a reduction in very many instances, but it will thoroughly establish locai j telegraphic communication through ; out all thickly settled regionB and will tend to increase business largely. From many stations the reduction will be 5, 10 or 15 cents un teu wordB, then wo propose to fix $1 for teu words as the maximum rate between all stations east ol the Mississippi and Missouri rivers. By this change the rates betwen numerous stations in , Iowa aod Missouri and others in i New England and the Atlanlio coast stales will be reduced to 1. while a conaiderable numher ot rates between statious in the southern and several ol the northern and eastern states will be reduced to 25 and 50 cents respectively. re-spectively. From New York, Philadelphia Phila-delphia aud Baltimore tho rates to Cincinnati and Chicago are to be 40 cents. From New Yurk to Washington, Washing-ton, Albany and Boston, Ihe competi tive rate, 25 cents, is to be unchanged Local rales throughout New York and New Eugland are to remain prely nearly as they are, except that a few will be advanced five cents and a large number reduced from 30 to 25 cents. To St. Louis the rate will be 50 cents; to Omaha 75 cents; to New Orleans $1. The rate lo San Francisco, $2, will not be changed. |
