Show Grnut Throws Packard Overboard. Over-board. Washington, 2, Representatives Eliis and Gibbon and Colonel Burko of Louisiana to day called on the president, i?ho showed them two tele-grama tele-grama prepared to be sent to General Augur and Governor Packard. In the first General Augur is informed that hereafter the troops must not be used for political purposes in Louisiana, Loui-siana, but for the purpose only of preserving the public peace and in aid ot the civil authority when the latter aro powerless to do so. The telegram to Packard was to the eflect that the policy of maintaining a state government by federal troops must be abandoned, as such use of tbe federal force was against the publio sentiment senti-ment and unjust to tho majority of the people. |
