The presidentelect president-elect was received by Ex-governor Dennieon, Senator Sherman and General Sherman, who escorted him from the depot. Theie were present as spectators about 2,000 persons, who voci;eroiiBly cheered as the party passed through the lines on their way to the carriages in waiting. President Presi-dent Hayes and family were driven to the residonco of Senator Sherman, where they will remain for the present. pres-ent. When the president-elect and party-arrived party-arrived at Sherman's residence a largo number of ladies and gentlemen were there to receive them, and extended ex-tended their congratulations. Arrangements are being perfected for celebrating the inauguration. Gen. Whipple of the United States army will bo the chief marshal of the , inaugural procession. The United . States troops and marines in the city and a light battery from Baltimore have been ordered to report for parade. The Washington Light Infantry In-fantry corps, tho Washington Light Guard and numerous civic societies soci-eties will also take part in the procession. The following visiting visit-ing organizations will bo in line: The State Fensibles and the Weccacoe Legion of Philadelphia, the Duquene Grays and Hutchinson's battery of Pittsburg, the Columbus Cadets" of Columbus, Ohio, companies F. and J. First Virginia National Guards, the ISth and 19tb regiments of the Pennsylvania Penn-sylvania National Guards, the Hart-ranft Hart-ranft club, the Americus club, of the 19th ward. Sixteen pyramids of flags and Chinese lanterns will be erected at Btreet intersections, and the residences resi-dences and business houses along Pennsylvania avenue will be decorated. deco-rated. In the evening the thoroughfares thorough-fares will be illuminated from the capitol to 17th street with calcium lights and Chinese lanterns, aud the houses will be illuminated. There will also he a display of fireworks and u torchlight procession. The public buildings along the routeof the torchlight torch-light procession will be decorated and illuminated. HAYES CALLS Ul'ON CHANT. During the session of the cabinet to-day President-elect Hayes, accom-I accom-I panied by General Sherman and Governor Dennison, called at the executive mansion, Mr. Hayes desiring de-siring to present hia respects to the president. The distinguished party were ushered into the council chamber, where the cabinet was in session, and all proceedings were stopped bo that the formalities of introduction in-troduction might proceed. The president pres-ident elect was especially greeted and congratulated by President Grant and the members of tho cabinet, all ol whom, with the exception of Secretary Secre-tary Morrill, who was kept away by sickness, were present, and mutual expressions of happiaess were exchanged ex-changed at the termination of the question that had agitated congress aud the country. A general conversation conver-sation was briefly held, and the president presi-dent and the president-elect had an earnest, quiet conversation of some minutes duration, in which President Grant acquainted the president-elect with the directions given concerning the new occupancy of the executive mansion, and of arrangements made in regard to courtesies attending the inauguration ceremonies so far as concerned the present chief magistrate. magis-trate. AT THE CAPITOL. From the executive mansion the party drove to the capitol, proceeding at once, by invitation of the president of the senate, to the vice president's room, where an informal reception was held. The republicans and many democratic senators called to pay their respects, and were presented to tho president-elect by Senator Ferry. Subsequently a laree number of the house and other persons of prominence called and tendered their congratulations. President-elect Hayes remained at the vice president's room more than an hour. Among the congressmen who called on him were Eeagen, B. Hill, Blount and Chandler. At least 1,000 persons were in the corridors anxious to be presented, but the crowd constantly increasing it was deemed proper to restrict the callers to members of congress and their friends. The presence of the presi-dent-elect caused much interest in all parts of tho capitol, WHEELER ARRIVED. Vice president-elect Wheeler arrived ar-rived in Washington at 1 p.m. and proceeded to the capitol where he arrived shortly after President-elect Hayes. |
