Now York, 25 Many prominent bankers and merchants met at the clearing houso to-day to Bupport the movement for arranging a settlement between the defaulting southern states aud their creditors. William Cullen Bryant presided. Resolutions were ndopted deploring the existing condition con-dition of the defaulting states, expressing ex-pressing sympathy with them, recognizing recog-nizing the impossibility of full liquidation liquida-tion of their indebtedness, and recom mending a committee of disinterested arbiters between the states and bondholders, bond-holders, the arbiters being five bankersGeorge bank-ersGeorge S. Coe, J. D. Verraulige. B. B. Sherman, B. B. Carnegijes, and Enoch Pratt, with power to add to their number. The defaulting states aro invited to confer with this committee. |
