Show ILLINOIS ALL HAIL ! J ud go David Davie, who has been olocted United States senator from Illinois, will fill his seat in that body with distinguished ability, conferring mora honor upon his state than any genator since the days of Lyman Trumbull nnd Stephen A. Douglns. Illinois is a prinecly state and should be roprescuttd in tho seuato by great men instead of tho radical politicians that tho republican party has bten responsible for during several yoara past. Senator Ogleshy must not of flourse be ranked with General Logan, as the former is a gonial gentleman, a good companion, and not a ferocious radical bull-dozer; but in point of ability aud tho power which creates influence in the sonata of the United Statei, Ogleaby fails to represent Illi uois as she should be represented and as Judge Davis will represent her. Yet the hitter's eleotiou to the senate at this time miht prove unfortunate, especially if it should givo the opportunity oppor-tunity to President Ciraut to appoint Judge Davis' successor upon the supreme bench. Grant has had a lull share of these bench appointments, appoint-ments, and it is likely President Til-den Til-den would appoint an eminent lawyer of national reputation to fill the high and reeponsiblo positioo of successor to Judgo David Davis, while Grant might namo a man of mediocre abilities and second-class standing at the bar. Judge Lyman Trumbull would make a fitting successor to Judge Davis. |
