The statutes have been carefully care-fully examined by senators and rep resontalivea, aud noauthority is found by them for any loan the principal or interest of which is payable ex-clusive'y ex-clusive'y in gold. Coin ia the term used on all occasions, and Sherman, chairman of the finance committee, who has been consulted, says that no law has ever been passed binding the United Stales to pay in gold, but on the contrary both the principal and interest of ill bonded indebtedness was origina'ly made payable in coin. The fuuding act of July, 1S70, undei which the new bonds have been issued, makes them payable iu coin at thi standard value ut dale of this act. |
