The work i not intenuYil as a guide, nor yet as a history, but will answer very fairly for either, A chapter is devoted to w description of California, its boundarieH, topography, topo-graphy, its mountain anil river systems, sys-tems, climate, etc. The story of San Francisco is pleasantly told, I mm the time of the pitching of the first lent upon the site of the now great commercial com-mercial metropolis of the went. The popular resorts and objects of interest adjacent to San Francisco take up another chapter with their description. descrip-tion. The grand old mountains, the mammoth trees, the mncnificeni falln, the broad caves, and the wonderful won-derful and remarkable in nature, with which California is so abundantly bleestd, are happily portrayed, including in-cluding pleasing descriptions o( the nights to be seen by a tourist to the famed Yosemite. Not tlm least interesting portion of the work is an account of gold mining in an early day, and tables of the value of the precious metal extracted. Mr. Turrill has given much valuable statistical information, and he presents a book which will be found mteresling alike to Caltforniaus and others. |
