Show THJfi PANGUITCH HOMICIDE. Examination of Witnesses Before Be-fore Judge Eoreman Commitment Com-mitment of the Killer, and Holding of His Wife and Charles Wiley as Accessories. (Special Telegram.) Beaver, 12. Tho examination of Joseph Wood, charged with the murder mur-der of James Maxwell, near Pan-guitcb, Pan-guitcb, on Sunday, July lGth, was commenced on Thursday afternoon before Judge Boreman. After hearing hear-ing the testimony of Joseph Hancock, the first witness for the prosecution, the case was adjourned till this morning morn-ing at 10 o'clock. Hancock testified that he went with Maxwell to Wood's house on the ICth to get a steer in Wood's possession. Both stopped in front of the house. On calling, Wood's wife came to the window and said Wood was not at home. Maxwell Max-well said he had come for this steer, Mrs. Wood answering: "If you must have him, he is in tho corral." Maxwell Max-well and Hancock went to the corral. When within fifteen feet of tho bare witness saw Wood rise to his knees and Wiley by him, and Wood fired at Maxweil from behind a pobt with a double barrelled shotguD, ono barrol going off, twenty buckshot and Bix navy balls all entering the breast of Maxwell, who fell from his horse and died instantly. Wood camo to tbe bars and told witness to be off, and Wood fled to the hills immediately. Charle Wiley, the main witness for the defenno, testified that on the Mth of July Maxwell camo to Wood's house with three men; stopped at the front door; hold his hat in front of his body, and put what witness bo-lieved bo-lieved to be a pistol in his shirt; iwkod for Woods, whose wifo said ho was at Marshall's, down tho river. Mrs. Wood and Wiley wero hold undor $1D0 bonds for complicity j" tho murder, and Wood was committed commit-ted to jail hvre to await the action of the grand jury. |
