The Moody and San-key San-key meetings were oponod this morning morn-ing at 8 o'clock. All the arrangements arrange-ments about the great tabernacle being completed, 7,000 people greeted Moody's first appearance. Many city pastors were on the platform. Sankey sang with good effect, and the choir was harmonious. Doctor Goodwin of tho First Congregational church prayed with fervor and emotion. The sermon by Moody was characteristic and directed to the christian workers, the text being John 11, 39: "Jeaus said, take ye away the stones." The point of the discourse was the duty of christians to rid their hearts of whatever rendered them unfit for tho Lord'B use pride, covetousness, unbelief, un-belief, prejudice and sectarian bigotry. Alter tha benediction by Bishop Cheney, there were great hand shakings shak-ings and hearty greetings. Half an hour before the time lor afternoon Bervice the tabernacle was filled, and there were people enough in the streets to fill a dozen churches. Moody preached from the words, "He that reapeth receiveth wages," John iv, 36. The discourse was a perfect torrent of gospel enthusiasm. Rev. Drs. Kittredge, Chamberlain, Goodwin and Thomson led an overflow over-flow meeting io Farwell hall. At the evening meeting in Farwell hall twelve persons proflere I themselves as seeking Christ. The sermons every evening this week will be to christians. |
