Show Decoration Day. Memorial day has never before t been so appropriately observed in L'tahasupon its recent occurrence, last Sunday. The weather was de-' de-' light ful and the social, good feeling J which prevailed throughout the community, com-munity, made the occasion one long 1 to be remembered by those who did themselves the honor to participate a in the ceremonies. Every pleasure vehicle in the town was brought into service to carry the people to the Camp Douglas cemetery, and hundreds, hun-dreds, who were unable to ride, walked B to, the graveyard, where there was a multitude of ladies and gentlemen representing re-presenting all classes. AtCampDoug-j AtCampDoug-j las the procession from town was met iy a battalion of infautry.under command com-mand of Major Bryant, and escorted to the cemetery where a national salute was fired. On the east aide of tho graveyard a large platform, covered cover-ed with canons and festooned with the stars and stripes and flowers, had been erected for the speakers ef the day, managers of the ceremonies and prominent military and civic officials. offi-cials. There General John E Smith presided. The ceremonies were preceded by an appropriate prayer by Bishop Tuttle, after which Gen. Smith made a brief speech, Judge McKean recited a poem, Judge Lowe, General Maxwell, Major Hag an and General Gen-eral Connor delivered short addresses and other gentlemen sang 1 songs, the whole beiDg interspersed with music by the 14th infantry band. ' Then followed .the decoration of graves, which was participated in 1 generally by soldiers and civilians, 1 ex-confederates and federals. Ko ! vhere was the slightest ill-feeling manifestable veteransof the north and . of the south meeting on he moat friendly terms, aud joining in the pleasant duty which we all owe to the nation's dead. Tde grand marshal of j the day, Major Silva, hia assistants, j and all who had anything to do with J arranging or conducting the cere- c monies, acquitted themselves with L credit, and were justly praised for the j successful manner in which the day $ was celebrated. |
