The secretary of the treasury writes to the secretary of war in response to a communication from the war department on the 11th of February, covering a copy of a letter of Capt. J. B. Campbell, fourth artillery, on th subject of smucgling in Alaska, recommending that revenue cutter be stationed in the waters of that country. Secretary Bristow says Ihe treasury department depart-ment has not at its disposal a revenue vessel that can be assigned to permanent per-manent duty in Alaska, but the steamer h't'lcci, stationed at Fort Townsend, W. T.,wili be ordered to make occasional cruises into those waters with a view to remedy the evil complained of. |
