Show Berger Released. The tittle Jew, Berger, who wa confined in the penitentiary cn a charge of grand larceny, tas been released, and is now on his way to the aterland. The circumstances of bis getting in tbe penitentiary were extremely ex-tremely amusing. He was placed in the city chain gang for six months on some charge, and disliking it, bethought himself of a plan of getting out. He bad beard of tbe robbery o! a span of mules in Weber Countv and eent for Nelson, then United Stales marshal, told him that he bad committed tbe theft and sold the mules, his description of the afidir and animals being very accurate. He expected, of course, that he would get out of the chain Eang, and, by the time his trial came up, the aix months to which he wsb ! sentenced by tbe police judge wonld have expired. But he was allowed to remain in the city "employ" until a few days before the six months had been completed, when be was taken to tba Third district court. He then repudiattd bis confeeaion, the pretext he had orTered now beiog futile, but to no avail. The jury found him guilty, and he was sentenced to six years in the penitentiary. Tbe facts, discovered later, proved that the mule robbery etory was an invention, in-vention, but he was then in the penitentiary. The matter was brought before the governor, and he was par-doned par-doned a few days ago, after having served over two years of the time of his sentence. He was very industrious and accumulated quite a little ium of money by making bridles, whips, eto. He is said to havo wealthy relatives rela-tives ia Europe, and declared he would return here some day. |
