Show INCIDENTS OF THE GREAT TRIAL. The counsel for Mr. Beecher during dur-ing the cross-examination of Moulton attempted to show that .the defendant defend-ant fixmnim lMfer nf contrition hurl been altered. Shearman charged that certain words had been added, and that it was written with two different dif-ferent kinds of ink. It is said that the defense will endeavor so prove by experts that the letter was altered from its original form, and that taken in connection with the fact that it was written by Moulton at Beecher's dictation, a strong - appeal will be made to the jury to consider it void. There is a good deal ol sneezing at Moulton, ou tho part of the Beecher crowd, on account of the frequency of the answer, "I don't recollect;" but in reality the man has testified to such a pile of facts, extending over a period of four years, that tho wonder is how he remembers so much. He has stood fire well, in the faco of two of the foremostlawyersin the country; for, though nominally under examination examin-ation by Tracy, scarcely a minute passes without Evarts jumping to his feet and taking the witness in the Hank, The audience aro always on the watch for these so poppings up of Evarts, and it they get a chance at all, from the petulance of his manner; or the aptness of the. remark, they give a loud guffaw. |
