Show Tabernacle Heeting. Tbe congregation that aembied for worship in the large Ubernacle on last Sunday afternoon, was addressed hy Elder George Tkaedale. The speaker commenced his discourse by j saying that he understood in part i hsw great was the responsibility rest-ing rest-ing upon those wno occupied tbii stand or any other to speak to the people. And furthermore that no one could interest the saints unless he was inspired by the holy ppirit. He knew that he himself was responsible for what be should say this afternoon. A popular doctrine in tbe Cnristian world was thai "God so loved the world that be gave his only begotten son, that whosoever believeth in him shall not perish, but have everlasting life. The Savior said, "In me ye shall have peace, but in the world tribulation. Ye are not of the world, for if ye were of the world the world would love you; but the world bate you, therefore ye are not of tbe world. " It would be well to consider, tbis afternoon, after-noon, whether there were any condi tions on which salvation was to be obtained. He then referred to the savings of Corist to Nioodemus: "Unless a man ia born again he cannot can-not see the kingdom ol God ; unless a man is born of the water and ot the spirit, he can in no wiae enter into the kingdom of God." When a comparison com-parison was made between tbe doctrines taught by the Savior and those proclaimed by Joseph Smith, they were found to be instrmt awnni Joseph did not preach his own doc-1 doc-1 trines or ideas, but they were the doctrines of tbe Father, If Joseph Smith was not a prophet, he was one of the greatest impostors that ever lived. It was an easy thing to cry false prophet, but one thing was clear, that if Mormon iam was a false doctrine doc-trine the Booner it succumbed to the test of investigation, the better. There was enough error in tbe world wita-out wita-out it. It seemed a very harBh paying when Jesus declared that "He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved, but be that believeth not shall be damned;" it would seem as though people could not believe as they pleased. But it waa plain thai people in the Christian world had no difficulty in believing that Jesus was the son of Giid, for it wbb their tradition to so believe; but it was not such an easy matter to obey his doctrines and live according to his laws and commandments. Repentance Repen-tance was as necessary as faith to "prepare "pre-pare them for the "new birth" that should entitle them to "enter into tbe kingdom of God." He dwelt on the agency men were possessed of, and showed how a man drew inspiration from the holy ghost, beBtowed upon him through obedience to the gospel, whereas the individual who repented not died in bis sins, and consequently came under the condemnation spoken of by tbe Savior and pronounced pro-nounced upon those who Bhould reject bis message and his ministers. Tne speaker then quoted largely from the writings of St. Paul in prool of bis statements. "There are three that bear witness in heaven, the Father, the word and the boly ghost, and there are three that bear witness on earth, the spirit, the water and the blood." When people turned away from their sins tbey became righteous. right-eous. The apostle Baid: "Little children, chil-dren, let no man deceive you, he that turneth from bis Bins is righteous, even as he (God) is righteous." Jesus said: "The world is under the bondage bond-age of sin, because they come not unto me." He then referred to the angel predicted in St. John's Revelations, nnd to thfl introduction of the Book Mormon as the literal fulfillment, it having been brought by an angel to Joseph Smith. Quoted from the ancient scriptures concerning concern-ing John the Baptist coming to prepare the way of the Lord, both before Christ's first and second coming; com-ing; showed that that prophet came and bestowed the Aarooio priesthood, which he held, upon Joseph Smith and Oliver Cowdery, that tbey might baptize with water as did John himself when be labored as tbe forerunner on the banks of the River Jordan. Referred to the preaching of the elders. They had been whipped, imprisoned and their lives endangered, endan-gered, and bo rue had given up their lives for the truth the same results that followed the proclamation of the gospel in all ages. The saints were accused of having a plurality of wives. ! The world was surprised when they Baw people "doing the works of Abraham." The epeaker stated that it was supposed that tbe system of plurality would debase and demoralize de-moralize tbe Bisters, and courts were instituted to prosecute those who took more than one, but he asked bow many women had presented themselves before those courts for redress of tbe supposed wrongs T The world also practiced a plurality of wives, but with the difference differ-ence that they acknowledged one; wife only, and kept the remainder ae mistresses, whose oflspring were branded from their birth as bastards. The Constitution of the United States, the grandest document ever inscribed by man, would be defended by the saints with their hearts' blood. This country was heralded aa the asylum for theoppressed of all natioos.blessed with tbe freedom of religious liberty, aod toleration for all creeds and profusions pro-fusions ; and asked tbe American people at large to stand by these grand principles, as the eaints were willing to do. Ho bore his testimony to tbe truth of the latter day work, and pray. .1 that tbe righteous might reach the haven of rest, in the name of Jesua. |
