Show Pacific Mail Subsidy. Washington, 15. The ways and means committee examined A. H. Whiting this morning. Ho swore that h&lreceived only $ot,500 from Irwin Ir-win for his services in promoting the passage of the Pacific Mail subsidy. Pais was wholly contingent on success, suc-cess, aud was received after the bill passed and was a il kept by himself. He was employed with a special view to influence Senator Cole, but he found the senator needed no influenc ing, being already he.arlily in favor of the subsidy and lully committed to it. Witness did nothing for his. money except to talk with even-body he knew, and set forth the national advantages ad-vantages to result from granting the increased subsidy. His first arranee-, ment with Irwin was to receive $10,-000 $10,-000 a year during the term tor which the subsidy might be secured, but before be-fore he came to Washington it was agreed that the whole thing should be capitalized at $o3,o00. Representative Storm was recalled at his own request aud said he opposed oppos-ed the subsidy throughout, and never received a dollar for his vote or influence. in-fluence.
