Show EMHHT 4ND HIS MALIGNERS. We UDderbtttotJ Governor Emery will leave for Washington this morn ' ing, where, it is pretty generally be ' Heted, he goes for the purpose of try j ing to nave himself from official decapitation. It this be true ho will reach the capital none too soon. Intelligence In-telligence from Washington ia to the effect that the governor's removal is not ouly possible but quite probable. Last week it was tnought bis excellency excel-lency could not be displaced, but since then his enemies bave been working like beavers, and not to dixguise the truth, have succeeded in reversing tbo situation. Tbe exact nature of the charges against the governor hue not been developed here, but the source whence tbey emanate tell plainly that whatever else they may contain, misrepresentation and falsehood are the chief elements. Those are tha Btock in trade of the contemptible clique of soreheads who have been waging this war upon Governor Emery. Tbcir firat and leading objection to the governor is that he canoe t stoop so low as to affiliate with them. Ho will not descend to their level, and refuses to be uaed officially, as a tool in their hands. Were he a blatberekite like Webfoot Woods, hie course would be satis factory to those who now oppose him; but would be moat objectionable to the people, and detrimental to the beat interests ol the territory. This has been demonstrated on the two or tbree occasions in the past when hie excellency has exhibited signs ot weakness and a lack of moral courage to withstand tho demagogue pi ensure brought to bear upon him. The very fellows who are now loudest in his denunciation were then foremost in patting him on the back and encour aging him in going astray. The conservative con-servative course pursued with a few divergences by Governor Emery iB thm nnip mi thot cuti be successfully followed by one in his office. It ia the course that will do more than any other towards bridging the chasm that actually exists hero. The governor has a refwonably correct cor-rect idea of the anomalous situation situa-tion in Utah, and being adverse to radicalism hi occupancy of the gubernatorial guber-natorial office will do much towards barmoniziug conflicting elementa and breaking down barriers that others more inconsiderate than he would strengthen. It ia a fact that as governor gover-nor he gives general Q&tiefaction to the whole people. He ie especially acceptable to the conservative olaaaes among Mormoua and non-Mormons; and ia really objectionable to none save the few malcontents, who can be pleased by no official who ia not big Oted and pn-judiced in favor of strife, and constitutionally opposed" to peace. Such a man aa would eatiafy them would possess none of tbe quali fications that a governor should have. Too many ol that class of men bave already bald federal offices in Utah, and to them, more than to any other cause, is due tbe Hong-protracted clashing of olasses here. When the national administration shall cease to1 send aa its representatives strife-: makers and fanatics, and will appoint officer who will work for the best good the territory, then this incessant inces-sant quarrel and tbe perpetual Utah trouble will be approaching the end. We believe Governor Emery so considers con-siders the matter, and for this reason liia retention in tbe office la desirable. A good feeling now exists throughout the territory. It ia vastly different from what it was a few yean ago, whan almost every federal office was filled by a missionary bigot. Though the unprincipled olique have by some fraud and chicanery succeeded in getting a lever under bis excellency that may overturn him, the power is not so great but it may be overcome. However, to mil lily it prompt action must be taken on the part of the governor's friends. By truthful representations and a hearty endorsement of his excellency iuch aa the intelligent and better class of the commuuity can give, the malicious and unscrupulous opposition opposi-tion may be defeated in their base designs. We hope some step will be taken to thwart the dastardly das-tardly attempts of tbe soreheads upon Emery's official lite. Aside from the fact that we are not likely to get a better or fairer man as governor than our present executive, the latter 's removal at this time would be specially deplorable, from the fact that it would bf a triumph of venality, corruption and falsehood ovtr right nd justice; tbe overthrow of an official who is di?ijOstd to do right, by ft handful uf th ii, uuprincii. ; orebeads'Who coud m t use bim far their wickfd purposes. |
