Show OUR HEW MARSHAL. President ifayes, yesterday, nomi-natfd nomi-natfd for United States marshal of Utah, Michael Shaughnessy of Mississippi. Miss-issippi. This selection was made when the late marshal's removal waa determined upon. Tho nomination would have been sent to the senate last week had it not beeu for tho efforts of an Indiana delegation who tried to get the plaoe for Judgo Den-ney, Den-ney, late of the Indiana supreme caurt. So far as we have been able to learn tho history of Shaughnessy, he bears an averago republican record, re-cord, lie gained some notoriety in Mississippi and favor with the administration ad-ministration by tho part he took in trying to bring tho Chisholm murderers murder-ers to justice. He claims, however, that he cannot live in safety in Mississippi, Miss-issippi, hence- his assignment to Utah. If ho has ability enough to understand his duties as marshal, and sufficient discretion to attend simply to these duties, he will And the Utah marshalship a pleasant and profitable office; but if he comes hero as a missionary, mis-sionary, with the determination of settling set-tling the peculiar question with which statesmen and wise heads have baon wrestling for the lost quarter of a century, this territory will prove anything but a delightful home for him, and his official head will be in far more danger of decapitation than was his physical caput in Mississippi. On the whole we welcome Captain Shaughnessy, believing he will prove himself a fair and well-disposed official. |
