As is always the case on that festive occasion, oc-casion, the rum shops were the centres cen-tres of attraction, for a certain class, and long before night East Temple street was pretty well sprinkled with men who exhibited staggering evi-jdences evi-jdences of having accepted the "coni-:plimenls "coni-:plimenls of the season" from some saloon man who was dealing out the holiday beverages gratis. Though , there was considerable drunkenness1 visible, there wag not so much as1 might have been expected considering consider-ing the amount of free liquor that was to be had; and only three "observed" "ob-served" the day to such an extent as to be jugged for intoxication. The community at large spent the day in quiet enjoyment and feasting. In the evening lively music waa beard in every direction, and hundreds of merry feet tripped the hours away in tho social dance. Taken altogether, Christmas passed off in fitting style, and was the occasion of much enjoyment. |
