Two parlies of hoys, one white, the other colored, began to throw torpedoes and Koman candies across thestreet at each other. What was at first sport soon became a heated conflict, and stones from the newly macadamized street were substituted sub-stituted for fire works. The parties were reinforced respectively by black and white men and the fight became general. Ono of the negroes made an assault with a club on a white man and was shot and it is thought mortally wounded. Yesterday morning the town marshal arrested the ringleaders ring-leaders and all was quiet on Christmas. Christ-mas. ANOTHER YERSiON. Cincinnati, 26. A Lexington, Ky. special says: A collision occurred between be-tween whites and blacks at Versailles on Thursday evening in which two negroes were killed and others wounded wound-ed and two whites perhaps mortally wounded. The affair originated in the sportive shooting of fire crackers between the two parties on each side oi the street, One white man passing pass-ing on horseback annoyed by the firing discharged a revolver, which was- followed by an indiscriminate .firing on both sides. The negroes were driven for refuge into a house. which the whites set tire to and compelled com-pelled them to surrender- All the negroes werejailed and quiet restored. |
