Show J The Verdict, j Up to the retiring of Judge Schaef-I Schaef-I fer, last night, the jury in the Buiton ; case bad not agreed nor reported to I tbe court. The court room was well filled until late in the afternoon by persons awaiting the entrance of the ijury with their finding. The topic ! was the all important subject of con versition everywhere in the city yesterday, yes-terday, and considerable wonder was expressed at the inability of the ;ury to come to a unanimous conclusion. Various rumors relative to the status of the jury were current. According to these the jury at first stood nine for acquittal to three (or conviction; con-viction; later it stood teo lor acquittal acquit-tal to two for manslaughter, and still later on it was reported that there were eleven for acquittal and but one (or manslaughter. However, these are not to be relied upon; but it it is reported aa a positive fact that at least nine ol tbe jury are agreed upon rendering a verdict of not guilty. So fr, no disposition is evinced to discbarge dis-cbarge the jury and the general wish appears to be that it should be kept out until a decision ie reached. What today may bring forth with respect to this matter will bo awaited with considerable anxiety and interest. |
