Tiie name &i the party who d.d the killing has not yet been ascertained, but he is said to be a Frenchman named Stevens, while Marcellus Bates and Jim Haas were the victims. Tnere are two stories as to the cause of the killing, one of which is to the efiect that the Frenchman French-man bad recently marritd a girl wliote reputation for virtue prfivicua to mrvr-riagfii mrvr-riagfii ttid very poor, and he seeisi'? 10 have mistrusted her biace their union. He is employed at night work iu a mine in Ophir caiion, Dut for some reaOQ remained in his cabin with his wife on Sunday evening. While there Bites and Haas are said to have come to tke place and demanded admittance, anJ upon being refused, broke open the door, entered and were met by the Frenchman, who had a shot gun in bis band, which he fired at the part ies who broke in, killing both. The other vertion is that on Sunday morning Htaa and the Frenchman bad been quarreling regarding some matter, but parted without any serious results. Id the evening Haas stated that he was going to the Frenchman's cabin, and the tenor of his remarks were euch that it was inferred bis intention was to continue the quarrel of the morning and work up a fight with the Frenchman. Hs started for tho cabin and was followed by Bates, who, it is said, intended to use bis influence to prevent the trouble. Arriving at the cabin, Haas knocked for admission, which being refused, be kicked the door in. Stepping inside the cabin, with a six-shooter in his hand, he found the Frenchman sitting on a chair, and lying across his lap was a shotgun. The Frenchman raised the gun, and taking aim at Haas, lie being the first to enter, pulled the trigger, and jjHaaa fell dead. The load bad taken efiect in the neck and left shoulder. Bates turned and fled when he saw Haas fall, and the Frenchman, who, of course, believed Bates intended to assault him also, followed him out of the bouse and fired the charge still remaining in the gun at him. Bates also fell dead, tho load discharged at him lodging in bis back and killing him instantly; It is not known whether the Frenchman French-man has yet been arrested, though an officer was after him. L, Bethnne held an inquest over the bodies of Bates and Haas, but nothing has yet been heard as to (be verdict of the jury. Bates is the man who some time ago killed a person named Goodwin, but was discharged. The general feeling is that his taking ofl is a loss which the commnnity can well aflord. |
