Show The California farmers are not bo much at the mercy of the grain dealers and speculators as heretofore. In years past the dealers have had it all their own way, as regards prices. Very few farmers had barns upon their places for storing grain; nor have they now, but large warehouses have been erected at convenient points along the railroad where wheat is stored at very low prices. It used to be that the farmers would thresh their grain and pile it on the ground, where it could safely remain without even shelter, frOm June to October, but before the raioy season set in the grangers had to dispose of it.when speculators could buy at their own figures. The warehouses have changed matters, and the farmers are showing a disposition to hold on to their grain for better prices. So far the new arrangement is working altogether in favor of tho grangers, : and against the speculators. |
