Show THE HORSE EXHIBITION Tho immeusa crowd who attended the exhibition of horBes at Agricul tural Park, yesterday, speaks more than one good word. The attendance showed lhat the people are very fond of that sort of exciting entertainment and also that they have confidence in , the ability of tho track managers to ( preserve order and decency. Re- Bpectnble people of both sexes and all classes were present, and indeed formed the larger element in the assemblage. A good deal has been done within the past few months in the way of elevating the enjoyments of the turl by liberating them fiom the evil influeucea under which they have so lout; been degraded. Too many of the men who owned or con- trolled the fast horses that went in races were- not trustworthy, and very few were above t ifeiog advauUgo of the confidence reposed in them- to rob the people. These turf exhibitions and trials of speed are useful, as well as amusing, and they will be well patronized when the public under stands that it wul ba dealt with fairly and its rights protect;!. This confidence con-fidence tiie public cannot have until the turf ie rid of the jockej. the frauds and the swindlers, who huve done so much to disgrace it. That the park association has already done much in this direction h shown by the belter feeling that prevails throughout the community; and the past very properly leads to the ceo-camion ceo-camion that more will be done in the future, until the turf is elevated to the high position that itoimuid occupy, oc-cupy, Such exhibitions as that ol Saturday afternoon make one have a better knowledge and inspires in h'ra a higher appreciation ol the powrv and qualities of the uobl-at of brutes, and very naturally inculcates and cultivates a desire for improving the blood of horses, which cannot fail to prove of great value to the country. We hope to see more of these shows in this city, and confidently bslieve that a will-conducted track, as ve now have, wid bring them atout. |
