Show THE ELECTION TO-DAY. The biennial election for delegate to congress from this territory will occur oc-cur to-day. Everything indicates that itwill be unprecedentedly quiet. No apparent interest haa been takm iu the matter, one side rtutiug serenely in the knowledge that it will be uc ceaflllil, and tbe other bido hUo real iziug that it would be time and money thrown away to make any effort at Blectini; anyone. Only oue i omina-lion omina-lion has been made, hence there can be no opposition. It may ninnwi be regretted that there uro ni t more candidates can-didates in the field, fur tins luck of opposing force is leading the people I into careless habits that my prove disastrous to them oi.e of these days. This inactivity and luck oi interest in the election is a thing that is growing upon the voters of Utah, and we shall be agreeably disappointed if it does not manifest itself to an alarming alarm-ing degree to-day. Tbe vote of Utah at this election should be between 30,000 and 35,000. There ore fully 35,000 legal voters in the territory, but unless appearances are wonderfully wonder-fully deceptive the returns will not show more than 15,000 vet ;a cast. A live opposition candidate would draw to the polls 0,000 or 8,000 more, and a few enthusiastic meetings held during the past month, with some good, speeches, would have brought out pretty nearly the full voting strength. Politics may be proclaimed against as vigorously as we will, but a little of it infused into men has a wonderful efiect in the way of making them active and appreciative in the performance of their duties as citizens of the republic. |
