Tho colliery at which the dreadful explosion occurred today to-day belongs to Mitchell & Co., and is one of the largest in southern Yorkshire. York-shire. It is joined by underground works with Edmunds' colliery, where twelve years ago yesterday over 3U0 persons perished. The works extend many miles aud are ontirely worked with safety lamps under very rigid rules, and were considered safe. At 0 o'clock this morning about o00 menced work as usual. At half-past y the terriole explosion occurred. The exact position is at present unknown, but the miners in all parts of the mine woro startled by a loud report, followed by large volumes of smoke. Those who wero able rushed to the pit bottom, but the drawing cage was displaced. As soon as possible volunteers volun-teers wore ergauizod to search for the dead and dying, and those who had escaped. After being down some lime the volunteers reported about noon that they met with great difficulty. diffi-culty. They saw many who were alive but unconscious. It is impossible impossi-ble to give the number of lost. It is feared the first report of 200 will bo confirmed, though the managers mana-gers of the colliery hope that many may be saved. The operatives in all the colleries of the district are on the spot readyand anxious to do all possible for the relief of the sullerers. All the local surgeons have also arrived. All those rescued thus far are seriously burned and injured. Hundreds of young women audchildren are congregated con-gregated at the mouth of the pit, and as the bodies are drawn up the seene is of the most heartrending character. The latest accounts from the Swathe colliery indicate that the total number of lives lost is HO. The explosion ex-plosion was caused by careless blasting blast-ing operations. Another disaster of a similar character char-acter is reported to-day in a coal aiiwe near reutirch( in Sotitti Wales; twelve persons were killed and ten injured. |
