While Edwin Booth was giving tbe soliloquy in the last act of "Richard II" at MeVicker's Theatre, to-night, a shot was fired at bim by a man sitting in the left hand upper gallery. Booth sat still, until after about three seconds a second ehot was fired, when he rose and started toward the left wing of the stage, pointing out, as he went, the would-be assassin. Tbe latter was at once seized, and but for tbe intervention of efficerj, would have been roughly handled. He states tbat his name ia Marl Gray; that be ia 23 years old, a dry goods cUrk of St. Louis; that he ha been three years preparing to do this deed and is Buprised that be tailed; that his failure to kill Booth is tho only part of tbe attempt which he regrets. He refuses to Btate the cause of bia action, but says bis reaaona will be regarded as sufficient. |
