Show POWDER ACCIDENT. Two Men Badly Burned by a Powder Explosion. Yesterday afternoon Mr. G. Me-ginnily Me-ginnily and Mr. E. Ward were terribly ter-ribly burned by an explosion of powder wfth which they were working. For some time past these gentlemen have been making tests of a new kind of powder their own invention at a bouee in Pleasant valley, about four miles up C.ty creek. Finding their experiments successful, they had commenced making cartridges, and while occupit-d in this manner, the explosion took p'ace. Mr. M 'gi i'y says he was ramming powder in the cartridge, when by some means, for which he cannot account, it took fire and communicated tbe flame to the powder lying on the table which amounted to about seventy pounds. Mr. Ward was in the room working milt Vairv. a I lha limn iVlA r ft TV! ft was bo slight that a gentleman, Mr. W. H. Shock, in an adjoining room, scarcely heard it. Both Mr. Ward and Mr. Meginnity started for the doors as fast as possible, but the latter gentlemen found so much difficulty in so doing, owing to bis eyes having been so terribly burned, that he almost despaired of ever being able to make his ecC-ipe. Mr. Ward went out of the south door and immediately ran into City creek, nd Mr. Meginity finally succeeded in getting out of the east door and also ran to the creek, the olothes of both 'eing on fire. Mr. Shock, who was uninjured, placed both the wound td persons in their wagon and brought them to the city where Drs. Hamil ton and White cared for them Mr. I Meginity ia terribly injured, the flesb being burned from below tbe waist up. His beard and hair are ail burned off and the skin is crisp all 1 over his body, bis face also being almost black and crisp. Mr. Ward, 'hough by no means so seriously injured, in-jured, was likewise badly burned, bis Sesb resembling a parboil. The rea son for their being burnea only on the upper part of the body is that the explosion, whioh resulted in their ujury, was from the powder on the :taile at which they were working, and their limbs were consequently dved. Mr. Ward will recover in a -taort time, but Mr. Meginity's injuries, injur-ies, being of such a severe character, it is impossible to say how his wounds will terminate. There does not ap-oear, ap-oear, however, to be any reason why he should not recover. They are unable to account for the explobion, in any way, and say tbey bave made test after test tbe results of which have always given satisfactory assurances of the bar ml ess qualities of tbo powder. It is possible the cause will remain a mystery. The building in which the accident took place has heretofore been used tor pleasure purposes by Mr. John Sued, and had been purchased for tbe purpose of carrying on their enterprise. enter-prise. At the time of the explosion there was about a ton of mixed pwder in the building, all of which took fire and the whole building was burned to tbe ground. Mr. Meginity was unable to say how much ot a loss tbey will sustain. |
