Toe addition of these 219 names waa a matter of public notoriety. Witness waa appointed by the secretary sec-retary of the treasury as an employ;: io tbe secret service. Tbe letter of recommendation written writ-ten by Governor Noyes was submitted. It is a formal recommei.dation to Secretary Sherman, mentioning witness wit-ness as one of many republicans ostracised in Florida and commending commend-ing his application to the considera-1 tion of the secretary. Witness never know flrttiArnnr Nncoi- riirin't nnt in evidence before tbe returning board anything excepting facta as lurnished him. It was the idea of southern republicans re-publicans to impress upon the minds of northern republicans that everything every-thing was lair and honest in Florida. To Butler Witness believed the returns re-turns in Archer precinct, should have shown 219 voting in excess of what they did foi tbe republican party. Republican officers made up the deficiency de-ficiency from tbe registration book, ao as to make the returna Bbow their proper number of votes. He believed there bad been fraud on both sides When tbe votes were turned out of tbe box, he missed a number of republican re-publican votes that appeared as having hav-ing been legally cast. Dennis whs instructed to hold himself him-self in readiness to appear before the committee, it having been decided that tbe mutter of the manipulation of vctea in Alacbua county was not yet closed. Edward F. Noyea, state minister to France, testified that he waa in attendance at-tendance upon the canvassing board m Floiida curing tbe last p redid en tial election. He took a legal part in tbe proceedings of the canvass, arguing the case before the board of canvassers, etc. He undertook to find out the facts relating to tbe alleged (raud in Alachua county, Archer precinct No. 2, and owing to parties swearing one way and immediately imme-diately thereafter directly opposite, he lost all confidence in them, but finally from dilligent inquiry and tbe consistent testimony of some forty or I fitly republicans, that they bad voted a republican ticket, ho reached an honest conclusion that tbe count as returned was correct. He had asked Dennis to be a witness He (Dennis) bad proved the correctness ol the vote in question to the satisfaction of witness. wit-ness. He did not doubt Dennis' word that be intended to impress upou bin (Noyes') mind that it would not be Bale lor him to go on the stand for the republicans owing to bis knowledge of Iraud, but that he (wu nesf) could now sole oily swear that no uch impression was conveyed by tbe remarks of Dennis and Gen. Wallace, who was present at tbe lime, and now in tbe committee room would corroborate corrob-orate his (Noyea') statement. Wit tier's pronounced the statement rondo by General Cocke before tbe Florida ! rub-committee, to the effect that he 1 (witnw), Cowgill, Governor Stearns andMcLin were locked together in the room ol the secretar ol ntata betore the meetiug of the board, an unqualified falsehood. He bad no private conference with any of those gentlemen that required locked doors, and with JJoLin be bad no private conference at all. |
