The est u fa is simply simp-ly a largo underground room about about twenty-lour feet in diameter, round, not unlike a largo cistern. There is a fire in it, whether for warmth or religious rites I am unable un-able to determiue, but incline to bo-lievo bo-lievo the former. There aro three of these estufaa at Toas, Too Indians converse in the Spanish language, although al-though they have a languago of their, own. I do not think many persons' take any pains to understand it, nor do I think any persons here understand under-stand anything definite about their rites or their religion. It is said and generally believed here, that tbev keep up their worship of the Bun, that they nourish a perpetual fire in their .estulas for religious purposes, and that they look forward to the coming of their redeemer, Montezuma. Montezu-ma. Only ono thing seems plain to me they are a distinct race from the Indians of the plains. I believe they may be related to the Navajoes. They aro a superior type of people not savages. Of tho Navajos I will write hereafter, when I have visited them. The Tribune having exposed our scheme of colonizing this country with Mormons, I fear it will have to bo abandoned for the present, and as we could not openly work the inquisition, in-quisition, it is hardly worth our while to try to convert these Indiana. For historical statements I have relied upon Davis" conquest of New Mexico; for present facts, upon my personal observation. The mineral resources of Now Mexico I have not yet examined. There are mines of gold, silver, iron, copper, coal, salt, saltpetre, and other minerals. There is abundance of timber uo stumpage abundance of lime and plaster of Paris, marble, freestone and all other building materials. ma-terials. Without doubt New Mexico is yet deslined to become a bright star, in the galaxy of Rocky Mountain Moun-tain states. Respectfully, El Oe:spo. |
